    Injured Essien faces long lay-off

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has been ruled out for "several months" after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament, the club has announced.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury during Ghana's World Cup qualifier against Libya in Tripoli on Friday.

Essien will undergo surgery once the swelling around his knee has subsided.

The versatile Ghanaian has been a regular for Chelsea since his £24m move from Lyon in 2005, scoring 14 goals in 132 appearances.

That is a nasty injury, and as much as I hate Chelsea I wish Essien a full recovery.

ACL injuries are the worst for knees...he could be out for quite a while, at least till January i reckon.

Nah mate, a lot longer. He's looking at a minimum 7 months if he's lucky.

depends how bad it is though. Minimum will be around 3-4 probably, but if he has needed reco surgery he will be out for 10+

I suppose but as he's a footballer and he's very dependent on his knees and therefore can easily happen again, they probably won't be able to accelerate the rehabilitation. They've already stated that he's gonna be out for at least 6 months. It's amazing how long the swelling remains in the knee - it stays there for months.

plus he's ruptured them and not torn them which also takes longer...

Most complete midfielder in the world possibly on par with Gerrard for completeness.

Put him anywere, right back, centre back, holding mid etc he will do a brilliant job for you.

Really rate him and he is one of the only Chelski buys out of the big money signings, who was actually worth the money.

He's nowhere near on par with Gerrard. Defensively awesome, but he's not fit to lace Gerrard's boots when it comes to attacking play.

Yep - Gerrard got 20+ goals and 20+ assists last year. Essien can't even didn't even come close to getting a quarter of that.

Still, he is a decent player
