    Adams appointed new Pompey boss

    Adams appointed new Pompey boss

Tony Adams has succeeded Harry Redknapp as manager of Portsmouth, BBC Radio Solent understands.

Adams, 42, took charge of the team alongside coach Joe Jordan for Sunday's 1-1 draw with Fulham following Redknapp's departure to Tottenham.

The former Arsenal captain and England captain was named as Redknapp's number two in 2006.

He endured an ill-fated spell in charge of Wycombe and had coaching jobs in the Netherlands with Feyenoord and Utrecht.

Former Bolton and Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce and ex-Chelsea manager Avram Grant, who worked as technical director at Fratton Park in 2006, were reportedly among the favourites to take over from Redknapp.

Adams, who will be unveiled at a 1300 GMT news conference, begins his reign as Portsmouth boss with a trip to league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.

Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie said on Sunday that the south-coast club would take their time in finding a new manager.

Redknapp, who ended his second spell at Portsmouth after three years in charge, has already put in a good word for Adams and Jordan.

"I spoke to Peter about it and said 'you've got Joe and Tony and they are both terrific guys'," stated Redknapp.

Storrie insisted there were no financial problems at the club and that decisions would continue to be driven by owner Alexandre Gaydamak.

"In the summer we sold Sulley Muntari for a club record fee and sold Pedro Mendes but used most of that money in bringing in Peter Crouch and Younes Kaboul and a couple of loan players," he added.

"If we were to sell players we would reinvest and bring other players in. We've got a very, very good squad here, a quality side, and when January comes we will approach it then.

"Sacha Gaydamak has owned this club for two-and-a-half years and has continued to put finance into the club to bring in players.

"It will be his decision in January whether he wants to continue that growth and expand."

Meanwhile, Jordan expressed his surprise at the speed of Redknapp's departure, while also wishing him the best.

"It was a bit of a shock I must admit but Harry is a good manager and you expect that good managers will be wanted by big clubs," said Jordan.

"The speed of it has surprised a lot of people and it was a shock to me."

Makes sense really. Continuity and all that. Pompey have faired well ober the last few seasons with Redkanpp and Adams. Good luck to him.

Oh dear. Adams has it all to prove. He was an unmitigated disaster at Wycombe. He likes to project himself as a thinker...a chin-stroking pseudo intellectual who adds pauses and stuff for effect. In reality he's as thick as pig ****. Mark my words, he will be an abject failure.

Well, this was a lot more likely than Adams following his ex boss to Spurs.

He seems to have done well as a coach there - really tightened up their defence.

It remains to be seen if he is capable of performing capably as a manager. Big difference between being a coach and a manager as the likes of McLaren have found out.

I wish him all the best from Thursday onwards.

My God. Last night I so nearly started a thread about what a disaster it would be if he got the job, I suppose I just didn't quite believe they would be so stupid as to appoint him. He was absolutely shocking at Wycombe and every time I read/hear his views on football I find them staggeringly stupid. Barring further lunacy on the Pompey board's part, he will be out of a job by May.

What have I missed here guys?

Wycome disaster aside, he's been at Pompey with Redknapp for some time now and surely he's learnt from his experiences and developed as a coach/manager?

Or have I completely missed something here? Such as some inane ramblings on footy in an autobiography or something?

I think he will probably be okay actually. The main reason for this is Joe Jordan though. He has always seemed a very good coach and organiser. That said I didn't think Pompey were that good a team this year anyway and don't think they would do much even if Redknapp had remained in charge so the target to do 'okay' is pretty low in my mind.

It does seem to be a very odd state of affairs when after years of bringing in top European coaches the league has suddenly become awash with English managers of varying quality. In some ways I have to say I think it is a good thing. Although I would prefer some of the more talented lower league operators (like Gary Johnson) be given a chance over big name ex-players like Adams.

Wycombe aside, he just comes across as a complete dullard, and he's not a manager in the 'keep it simple' motivator mould, so I just cannot see how he'll do anything other than screw it up. I can't wait for his press conferences and interviews though, my Christ he's slow

Yep! Yet he clearly thinks he’s Bill Shankly – a forward-thinking, insightful intellect.

He wrote a column for The Observer during Euro 2004. It was a load of pretentious bollocks. IIRC he kept saying Wayne Rooney should be dropped, and of course he was great in that tournament and cemented his position in the England team. Ian Ridley was the paper's chief football writer then, and he and Adams are mates, so a series of articles would appear about how Tony likes opera, Tony reads poetry, Tony studies psychology etc. It tried to portray him as a Renaissance man. In fact he hadn't a clue at Wycombe and will probably be rubbish at Pompey. He needs to keep Joe Jordan at the club at all costs.
