I know but it just sounds so crazy to think Owen is "sacrificing" himself to take only 80k p/w. Man if I was on 80k p/a then that would keep me and my family sorted

People with short memories on here and plenty of slagging. This boy goes down as one of our most prolific strikers and was a major force in treble winning season!!
As for his situation now he is capable of playing for amuch bigger side than Newcastle and one that wins trophies. Nobody can slate him for wanting to play at the highest level again!El Nino!!

He doesnt need to 'try and run his contract down', it'll run down itself. All he is doing is not committing to a new contract - and that's his right. Why should he sign a new deal? Newcastle knew the situation when they signed him, a player way beyond their level, that they'd have to produce the results and become a successful club - or he'd go. What's the problem?Originally posted by Assassin View PostHe is trying to run down his contract as he tried with us. He is also a contributing factor on how well the Barcodes perform and their finishing position in the league
What exactly is his position.......apart from trying to rip off NUFC and leave on a free for his own personal gain
Owen is only bothered about two things; Ingerlund (but that is fading, as capello isnt picking him) and the most important........himself!!!
He is not a team player........he doesnt even know the meaning of the word "Team"
How's he trying to rip them off? He's seeing out his contract. When he signed, the only thing he committed to is this contract and he's going to honour it. What's he doing wrong?

I think the problem people have Craig is that its exactly the same thing he pulled with us, delaying making any form of commitment one way or the other over a contract in order to run it right down at one club, especially if that club is Newcastle, is perhaps fair enough, but to have done it twice in a career (when he's only had 3 clubs) does start to look rather mercenary.
Much though I couldn't give much of a toss about the Geordies, they did spend an awful lot of money on him, and have "stuck by" him through a lot of injuries etc... if he wanted to go maybe he could have allowed them to recoup at least some of what they spent rather than stringing it along.I could not dig, I dared not rob:

And people are outraged because a footballer is appearing to be a bit mercenary?Originally posted by MrMichael View PostI think the problem people have Craig is that its exactly the same thing he pulled with us, delaying making any form of commitment one way or the other over a contract in order to run it right down at one club, especially if that club is Newcastle, is perhaps fair enough, but to have done it twice in a career (when he's only had 3 clubs) does start to look rather mercenary.

In other news, dog bites man?

I dont think people would make much of an issue out of it even in football terms, if it was someone other than Owen.Originally posted by Reggie View PostI have to agree with Craig on this. If it was any normal walk of life then people wouldn't really have a problem with an employee looking out for numero uno. I know I do. I don't hold a grudge against Owen.
It's just that people are still bitter that he left us.

Well I've never felt that way about him. Okay maybe he could have done it slightly better, but I really can't hold anything against him that he wanted to move to a team that he felt would have more of a chance of winning major trophies than we did. The career of a footballer is short.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostI dont think people would make much of an issue out of it even in football terms, if it was someone other than Owen.

He epic-ly failed in his judgement, but that's not the point
