I will start by choosing Maldini...

Well because hardly any player have had a finer career at this point. And would be a perfect closure to his career at the end of this season.

My second choice would proberly be Makalele, also ending his career this season and hardly any player has dominated a position as he has, and almost gets credited for inventing it as well.

As much as it pains me to say it, Beckham.

He's done an amazing job this season of coming back from the wilderness and proving he does still have talent, he's not just showbiz.

Maldini for his career, his dedication to one team, and the fact he's still playing at 40.

Outstanding and its doubtful we'll see his like again.

Giggs - despite playing for the enemy there is no doubting he has enjoyed a truly outstanding season. Plus he is a model professional on and off the pitch. I feel sick now....

I would have voted Maldini but have not seen him actually play this season so that would be unfair, IMO.

He may get credited with it but he didn't invent it. Dunga was earlier but I imagine there was someone else before him. I'd say he did more of a man-marking job but you could make a case for Beckenbauer in the 1966 final.

The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

The award is not for a single season, but for the whole active career, so you could vote for maldini despite that,.

I would agree with Dunga perhaps being earlier, but he was still more of a "classic" central midfielder, than a complete anchorman as Makalele was.

On the note of Beckenbauer I would argue that he was a sweeper, not a midfielder.

Most of the time Beckenbauer was a defender but he played a defensive role in midfield in the '66 World Cup final in order to nullify Bobby Charlton (and he may have done the same in the '70 QF - I don't remember). The tactic of playing a sweeper in front of the defence is certainly not a recent invention. I seem to recall an analysis of Dunga's role in '94 where it was suggested he held when Brazil attacked, providing a shield or cover for the centre backs while the two full backs went forward. If the opposition broke centrally then he went to close down the attack - if the opposition broke on one flank then he would drop into defence and allow a centre back to go wide.

I think a bit of a myth has built up about Makalele because he emerged during the Sky era and they base their whole approach to covering sport on individuals.

Could also say Desailly under the successful Capello era was very under rated in that role.

I voted for Raul but in retrospect and reading that this is for a whole career I'd go for Maldini. Although both players medal collection and contribution to their respective clubs is a credit to their dedication and professionalism.

I voted for Raúl too and I stand by my vote. He's class, I've always admired him.
