It was a joke about the longevity of Newcastle managers.

    OK, so it wasn't funny...
    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Okay so i will say here and now that Shearer will save them from relegation.

He will give the players the aggression and passion that they have been missing and they will score goals for him. He can't do anything to help their defence because thats a lost cause but he will get them to score enough goals to win enough matches.
        Chelsea (H)
        Stoke (A)
        Tottenham (A)
        Portsmouth (H)
        Liverpool (A)
        Middlesborough (H)
        Fulham (H)
        Aston Villa (A)

I actually think that the key is whether he can make a workable defense/midfield to make a platform. Looking at those fixtures their run in isn't as bad as some have made out but they will have to fight every game. For a while Bassong and Collocini formed a decent CB pairing and if he can instill some sense of organisation then they have a chance. Having a difficult fixture at home first off I think is a good thing for them but if they have a bad performance I think they are down.

Out of those 8 games, 4 of them are ones you could easily put straight down as losses.

Chelsea at home and Spurs, Villa and us away.

Bearing in mind they'll need to win at least 3 (if not 4) of their games, the task is monumental IMO. I dont thinkt they'll beat Chelsea, Shearer or no Shearer. And that then leaves them almost certainly needing to go to Stoke and win. You certainly wouldnt bet on that either.

They will beat Stoke, Boro, Pompey and Fulham. Probably get a draw at Villa Park. Owen and Martins will bang the goals in and Shearer will be declared a hero

They are in deep **** and with the squad they have and the way they are playing i think it takes more than Alan Shearer to save them this year. The only way I see them staying up is for the other relegation threatened teams to have an absolute mare of a run in and basically hand it to the geordies.

Whereupon, due to public acclamation and Ashley's desire to ingratiate himself with the fans again (so his kids aren't bullied any more), Kinnear will be booted upstairs and Shearer will reluctantly become permanent manager. He will then lead them to two deathless seasons of mid-table nonentity, at which point he will believe that he is indeed the true heir to the wisdom of the Buddha - a Geordie Gautama no less - and splash billions on flair players who don't defend in the mistaken belief he alone can unlock their true potential that lies so far invisble to us less enlightened types. The team will get off to an appalling start to the season and bump along in and around the bottom three until he is sacked at the end of March.

And so the Great Wheel of Life will turn again and the Geordie fans will once more start thrashing around in their ceaseless and bare-torsoed quest for the Nirvana of a piece of silverware.

I think it depends a lot on where the likes of Spurs and Villa are in terms of whether they have anything much to play for. I don't think Spurs are that great and Villa have shown that when tired they are not a great team either.

I'm not sure that they can beat Chelsea but I can see a draw.

Spurs will potentially be playing for a place in the Uefa Cup, while Villa's top four hopes may not be completely gone.

While Wise seems to be on the way out, Iain Dowie is on the way in and is to join Newcastle to work as Shearer's right-hand man in the club's battle against relegation.

It is believed that Shearer was impressed by Dowie during their brief time together at Southampton and, although the two are not friends and have had no long-term contact, Shearer thinks that the former Crystal Palace and Charlton manager, who has also had stints at QPR, Coventry and Oldham, can provide valuable tactical knowledge for the struggling side.

Dowie's arrival will not spell the end for the first-team coaches Colin Calderwood and Chris Hughton, however. Though Dowie will be Shearer's No2, both Hughton, who has been working as caretaker manager in Joe Kinnear's absence, and Calderwood will remain at the club in a coaching capacity.
Anyone employing Dowie must want to be relegated

                              From the BBC gossip:

Alan Shearer will earn around £1m for his eight games in charge of Newcastle, with an additional £1m to come if he keeps them in the Premier League. (Daily Mail)
BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson said he thought it was an April Fool's joke when he received a phone call telling him about Alan Shearer's return to Newcastle. (Daily Mirrror)
