I know that referees have a difficult job and the FA want to give them support etc. But it's very undermining of the whole system if they try and defend referees indefencable decisions and punish players and managers for questioning them
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

****ing spot on. They're like ****ing stupid headmasters, the FA. Nothing will be tolerated by players or managers (unless it's ginsoak), everyone gets hauled into the headmaster's office to 'explain' their comments. What's to explain, it's obvious what he means and it's the same as everyone is thinking.

Yet, Howard the **** house Webb gets off scot-free and isnt required to explain his shambolic disgrace of a decision. Pathetic.

The only possible positive that could hopefully come out of this, is that the ref for Boro v Mancs might feel a subconscious need to balance it out. I doubt it though. If by some miracle, the mancs are struggling at the riverside, i fully expect another penalty.

Howard Webb has been demoted to the Championship eight days after his controversial performance at Old Trafford.

The referee's decision to award Manchester United a penalty against Tottenham last Saturday has been heavily criticised, and his next appearance is set to be Reading's crucial clash against Birmingham at the Madejski Stadium at which both teams are in contention for the second automatic promotion spot.

Former Premier League referee Graham Poll believes Webb was looking to make a "big call" after being appointed for the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Everton next month.

"Howard Webb found out just this week that he'd got the Cup final and I think what you do is you think, 'I've got to prove I'm the best referee' and you look for a big call," Poll said. "It's the wrong thing to do and I think Howard's looked for a big call – nothing to do with favouring Manchester United, nothing to do with the situation in the game.

"The interesting thing for me is that Howard, when he knows he's got something right, is very strong in his body language – very strong indeed. After the decision, he was walking away, getting away from that area. The players, he knows, are incensed. As a referee, you have that feeling that you got it wrong in that situation."

Surely giving him the Reading vs Birmingham clash isn't really a step down, or any kind of punishment. Yes it's the championship but don't they usually have "premiership referees" for big championship games like these especially at this stage of the season?

Exactly, they've just given him a promotion clash potentially worth upto £50m.

Jermaine Jenas could face disciplinary action over his comments about referee Howard Webb following Tottenham's 5-2 defeat at Manchester United.

The Spurs and England midfielder accused Webb of "crumbling under pressure" after the hosts were awarded a controversial penalty while 2-0 down.

An Football Association spokesman said: "We have written to Jermaine to ask for an explanation for his remarks."

He has seven days to respond before the FA decides whether to take any action.

Following Saturday's match, Jenas stated: "I think it was a case of a referee crumbling under the pressure at Old Trafford really.

"The atmosphere, the occasion, the importance of the match, a lot of factors take their toll when making decisions."

He was also quoted as saying: "One thing which struck me about it was that he [Webb] didn't even think [about the penalty decision].

"It was like he'd already made his mind up when he came out for the second half that he was going to give something."

                      Webb admits to penalty 'mistake'

Referee Howard Webb has admitted he should not have awarded the penalty that reinforced Manchester United's stranglehold on the Premier League.

Tottenham led 2-0 at United on Saturday when Webb ruled Heurelho Gomes had fouled Michael Carrick, and the hosts went on to win the match 5-2.
Webb told the BBC: "I've looked at it again and I think it was a mistake but we make these decisions honestly.

"It's not always easy to see the way the play pans out from pitch level."
Interviewed by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, the 37-year-old added: "I could see the Manchester United player touch the ball and saw him get clattered by the goalkeeper but didn't see the extra deviation from the goalkeeper's fingers touching the ball.

"I'm disappointed as I always strive for perfection. I'll look at the tape in detail later in the week and try to avoid it happening again in the future.

"I never want to have a negative impact on a game and I get no pleasure from not reaching the high standards we set ourselves.

"But show me a man who's never made a mistake and I'll show you a man who's done nothing."

Meanwhile, it has emerged Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas could face disciplinary action over his comments about Webb's decision.

The Football Association has given him seven days to respond to his remarks in which he said Webb had "crumbled under pressure".

Jenas was quoted as saying: "The atmosphere, the occasion, the importance of the match, a lot of factors take their toll when making decisions.
"One thing which struck me was that [Webb] didn't even think. It was like he'd already made his mind up when he came out for the second half that he was going to give something."

Comes to back up my point that there are no conspiracy theories.

OK I know the argument will be that we have drawn too many matches, that United scored a brace in the 15 minutes after the penalty, & that Mr Tangled Webb is describing his remorse for his decision; but it makes me wonder if this should be in the LFC forum after it has had such a direct result on our run in.

Surely the fact that they happen at Old Trafford more than anywhere else, suggests there IS something dodgy going on.

How does it back up your point?

I don't think there is a conspiracy. It's just that refs are under pressure at OT to give decisions to the home team and often cave
