This weakened side malarky is a load of bollocks...football is a team game now, and every team has a squad of players. So long as United field a team from that squad, and don't start playing the Acadamy side, then they are fulfilling their obligation to the premier league rules.

The Premier League chairman has said on TalkSport that the mancs do not have to field there strongest team against Hull.

They dont have to follow rule E20 then, one of many they can ignore probably.

Who is to say what their strongest side is tho. He has a squad of strong players, and picks from them. That squad is his full strength side. Fielding a weakened team is not against the regulations. Fielding a team of 18 year old acadamy grads, not issued with squad numbers and with no PL experience behind them would be.

Fielding a weakened side means you're not fielding a full strength side - which is what the rule says you have to do. So it's breaking the rules.

What the PL should do is follow La Liga's lead and make every club submit a 25 man squad - only those included in the 25 can play league games. End of argument.

Thing is that rule really is pretty unenforceable anyway. I mean we might want to rest just Torres for a Premier League game because we have a Champions League game during the week, but then we wouldn't be fielding our strongest side would we.

Yeah sorry wasn't aimed at you, just a general observation. They could probably do with clarifying it (or scrapping it) to save such debates arriving in the future.

We have to submit a list of squad numbers, tho, so i'm pretty sure if we suddenly added 10 new numbers to that before a game, the FA would be pretty damn suspicious.

Like Reece says, if we rest Gerrard or Torres, we are not fielding our strongest side, but are instead utilising our squad. No different from what United are planning on doing, but to a larger scale. They will still be using experienced players tho, utilising their strength in depth.
