    BRUNA MAGIC SEALS CAMBRIDGE WIN
    Steve Hunter 28 July 2009 [liverpoolfc.tv]
A superb free-kick from Argentine starlet Gerardo Bruna earned a John McMahon managed Liverpool XI a 1-0 win at Cambridge United on Tuesday night.
The former Real Madrid youth player came off the bench and curled home a trademark set piece.

Summer signing Chris Mavinga made his first start for the club and played the full 90 minutes at centre half alongside Spaniard Daniel Ayala. The French defender, who made his debut as a second half substitute during Friday's outing at Tranmere, is equally comfortable at centre half and left back.

McMahon made a whole host of changes on the night and Academy products Nathan Eccleston and Adam Hammill gave lively displays.

Swedish starlet Alex Kacaniklic made his first start of pre-season since graduating from the Academy to Melwood during the summer and he had his moments on the left wing during a 60 minute run-out.

The U's welcomed their new boss Martin Ling who was paraded to the crowd before the kick-off.

Dutch striker Jordy Brouwer had some good openings in the first half but came out second best in a duel with the Cambridge stopper.

The introduction of Bruna, Eccleston and Hammill changed the game in the second half as Liverpool's youngsters turned on the style.

McMahon was delighted with the attitude and application of his young team and he told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It was a pleasing performance and we played some good football.

"Gerardo does strike a good ball from a free-kick and funny enough he scored three of them in training yesterday, so it was nice to see his work pay off on the night.

"Mavinga played his first 90 minutes for us and did well. He is a very athletic lad and he took up some good positions at the back for us."

A Liverpool XI are next in action on Friday night when they visit Notts County, who have former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson on their staff. Kick-off at Meadow Lane is at 7.45pm BST.

Liverpool team: David Martin (Martin Hansen 45), Stephen Darby (Emmanuel Mendy 60), Steven Irwin (Christopher Buchtmann 45), Daniel Ayala, Chris Mavinga, Victor Palsson (captain) (Adam Hammill 45), Ryan Crowther (Nikola Saric 60), Vincent Weijl (Vitor Flora 45), Jordy Brouwer (Nathan Eccleston 60), Andras Simon, Alex Kacaniklic (Gerardo Bruna 60).

So only really Darby and possibly Mavinga who might push for places and Martin who will probably go somewhere on loan to develop you would think.

What's happened to Hammill he was regarded as a good prospect at one point wasn't he?

If he was the guy on the right in the second half then he looked good for a while there. Not sure any of the attacking players showed the end product to be ready for more that the league cup to be honest. He has done well on loan though and perhaps a preseason friendly is not what he should be judged on.

No pre-season friendlies aren't the time to judge. But the fact that he was on the bench for a reserve team, and given he's been out on loan a number of times and has alot more experience than anyone in that squad it doesn't look as though he'll be pushing for a first team place any time soon. (Unless he's coming back from injury or something).

To be honest the captain was only given 45 minutes - I don't see starting or second half appearance as meaning much.

Hammill was wearing number 16 - he played in the centre of midfield for the whole second half. He was the guy who kept running with the ball and doing all the step overs and then losing it.

In which case he gets the even more confusing plaudits of being decent for a winger in the middle whilst still being obviously totally ill suited to the role. Who was 17? Flora? I only really noticed him at the start of the second half but for 5-10 minutes he was the only player in CM for the whole match who made good progressive balls?

I imagine that no one knows but is anyone aware if Gerrard was scheduled to come to this match. I have heard from a lot of people who were doing the collections for Cancer Research at the game that he was supposed to come and pulled out at the last minute leaving a lot of kids expecting to see him disappointed. I can well believe it is just that some people are idiots who expected him to rock up because he did at Tranmere but would be interested to know if there was a story here at all.

FFS what a farce United have become:

                          Ling resigns as Cambridge manager
                          [BBC]

Cambridge United manager Martin Ling has resigned from his position after only nine days in the job.

The club have cited "irreconcilable differences between Martin Ling and chairman George Rolls" as the reason.

A club statement said: "The club has reluctantly accepted his resignation. It has been agreed that neither party will make any further statement."

Ling replaced Gary Brabin, who left following a deterioration of his relationship with the board on 13 July.

It is believed the Cambridge players were informed on Tuesday morning of Ling's resignation.

Ling, who signed a three-year deal with Cambridge, should have led the team in their opening Blue Square Premier match of the season against Barrow on Saturday.

I saw an article in the Non League Paper yesterday that on the day that they announced Ling as manager they also called Liam Daish (Ebbsfleet manager and former United player) and another manager to Cambridge and then Rolls sent a text to both saying only "It's not u" - he seems like the sort of ****wit who should be in charge of Newcastle.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
