A salary cap wouldnt work because the clubs would just find other avenues to use, in order to bump up star players' 'capped' salaries. Appearance bonuses, etc.

And for the record, the billionaires are indeed along 'for the ride', there's no way they could make any proper money from football, not any amount comparable to what they already have.

        Salary cap would not work.

Limit a players max wages and the best will go to play in another league who will pay it. Be that Italy, Spain, USA or Egypt. Someone will always pay and are league will be less in quality because of it.

Limit a clubs max spend and it will be the youth players that miss out. Players will let go of the young players coming through who are slow to reach potential rather than let go of the high earners. That example would have seen Carra let go a long time ago.

A salary cap works in the American sports because there are no rival leagues or associations who will take the players on. They are the only big payers in their sports and have all the prestige.

Besides which, what do you think a cap would achieve? Do you seriously think that if all the Liverpools players wages were halfed tomorrow it would work out any cheaper to the fans? What would happen is that Gillet and Hicks would start to get a lot richer. Ticket prices would stay the same due to supply and demand, as would all merchandise.

I would rather a working class joe get rich from the working class game than a bunch of suits. So let the chairmen run the clubs and let them figure out what their own salary cap is.
        Forwards.......

          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

it now seems that they want to collect as many defenders as they have strikers. I expect them to be eventually linked with Vidic/Rio/Agger/Skrtel and Pique at some point as well.

I wouldn't put it past them. Look at the IPL in cricket.

It would obviously fail, but some crackpot would give it a go.

Remember it wasn't that long ago the Premier League were proposing an extra game abroad.
              Oh I don't know.

Toure on brink of £15m City switch

Arsenal's Kolo Toure has agreed terms with Manchester City and will undergo a medical at Eastlands on Wednesday, according to reports.

The 28-year-old Ivorian is set to leave Emirates Stadium after the two clubs agreed a deal in excess of £15million for the central defender.

Toure has been with the Gunners since 2002 when Arsene Wenger paid a nominal fee to recruit him from his native Ivory Coast, but he is now on the verge of leaving the North London giants.

Toure has travelled to Manchester for his medical, ahead of the deal being confirmed later on Wednesday.

It is believed Toure has agreed a four-year deal with the Eastlands club and his signing could be confirmed within the next 24 hours.

Wenger must be pissing himself selling toure and adebayor for 40m+ having said that he is definitely puttiing his neck on the line to those that see city as his nearest challengers for fourth.

Joleon Lescott poised to join Kolo Toure at Manchester City
                  By David Anderson 29/07/2009

Joleon Lescott is set to join Kolo Toure at Manchester City as Mark Hughes's spending spree continues.

Toure is expected to complete a £14million switch from Arsenal in the next 24 hours, with Everton's Lescott poised to join him.

Hughes has tabled a £15m bid for Lescott, but with Everton sticking to their £20m valuation, the defender is prepared to make the next move to break the impasse.

He is ready to tell DavidMoyes he wants to go to Eastlands in an attempt to drag the Everton boss back to the negotiating table.

Everton may respond by demanding Nedum Onuoha in part exchange. City's England Under-21 international can play centre-half or full-back and would help plug the gap left by Lescott.

Arsene Wenger yesterday agreed Toure's transfer and the centre-half flew home from Arsenal's pre-season training camp in Austria to meet
                  City.

The Ivory Coast defender, in the final season of his contract at the Emirates, was due to have a medical today and finalise personal terms.

That should be a formality; he has been offered a four-year, £90,000-a-week deal, 50 per cent more than he was on at Arsenal.

In fairness that looks a good team capable of breaking into the top four (on paper at least)

The one thing I would say that City have possibly got going for them in this transfer window, in their quest to break into the top 4 is the fact they have bought players only from the English Premiership.

And in doing so they have weakened, in some way, 4 rivals in Man Utd, Arsenal, Blackburn and Aston Villa (I know Blackburn may not be classed as a rival as in a top of the league team but they are a rival non-the-less).

Well i think Arsenal geting 45m for Toure and Adebayor has actually strengthened them

10m on Brett Hangelaand and 35million left for a Striker nice business
