Ten people were arrested after trouble flared during Manchester United's 2-0 Carling Cup win at Barnsley on Tuesday.
Police were hit with bottles and eight catering staff were forced to hide in a store room when fans broke into their kiosk and stole food and money.
One police officer suffered a minor facial injury during the disorder.
Eight people were arrested at the Oakwell ground and two more later when fans jumped onto railway tracks to try to stop a train leaving.
Stewards targeted
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said trouble broke out at about 2030 GMT.
Officers in riot gear and police dogs were used to try to restore order in the north stand and drive fans back from the pitch.
Elsewhere, catering staff had to barricade themselves in a store room for about 25 minutes when their food stand was attacked.
Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them and several fans ran onto the pitch towards the end of the fourth-round game.
The police spokesman spokesman said: "No-one was injured during this time, but one police officer suffered a minor facial injury.
"Eight fans were arrested, four Manchester United fans and four Barnsley fans.
"They have been taken to Barnsley police station."
Two further arrests were made at about 2300 GMT after fans jumped onto railway tracks in a bid to stop the Barnsley to Sheffield train.
A spokesman for Barnsley Football Club said on Tuesday night: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand.
"A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."
