    Mancs shame at Oakwell

Ten people were arrested after trouble flared during Manchester United's 2-0 Carling Cup win at Barnsley on Tuesday.

Police were hit with bottles and eight catering staff were forced to hide in a store room when fans broke into their kiosk and stole food and money.

One police officer suffered a minor facial injury during the disorder.

Eight people were arrested at the Oakwell ground and two more later when fans jumped onto railway tracks to try to stop a train leaving.

    Stewards targeted

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said trouble broke out at about 2030 GMT.

Officers in riot gear and police dogs were used to try to restore order in the north stand and drive fans back from the pitch.

Elsewhere, catering staff had to barricade themselves in a store room for about 25 minutes when their food stand was attacked.

Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them and several fans ran onto the pitch towards the end of the fourth-round game.

The police spokesman spokesman said: "No-one was injured during this time, but one police officer suffered a minor facial injury.

"Eight fans were arrested, four Manchester United fans and four Barnsley fans.

"They have been taken to Barnsley police station."

Two further arrests were made at about 2300 GMT after fans jumped onto railway tracks in a bid to stop the Barnsley to Sheffield train.

A spokesman for Barnsley Football Club said on Tuesday night: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand.

"A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."

English FA investigates Man United fan violence

LONDON -- England's Football Association launched an investigation Wednesday after Manchester United supporters were accused of causing substantial damage to Barnsley's stadium by ransacking catering areas during a League Cup match.

Police arrested four United fans and four Barnsley fans as the violence marred the visitors' 2-0 victory Tuesday in the fourth round.

The trouble flared at halftime in Oakwell's north stand, where about 4,000 United supporters were sitting.

Eight catering staff were trapped inside a food kiosk and had to barricade themselves in a store room for about 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash and food, police said.

Police wearing protective riot clothing were pelted with bottles as they attempted to restore order on the concourse of the stand and police dogs were deployed to drive fans back from the field.

South Yorkshire Police said one of its officers had a minor facial injury.

English soccer's governing body is awaiting reports from referee Chris Foy and an FA crowd control adviser who was at the match, while it plans to gather evidence from both clubs and the police.

"There is no place for anti-social or violent behavior in our game," the FA said in a statement. "Any culprit found to be involved in these disturbances and identified as such by either the police or clubs should be subject to a lengthy ban from attending football matches."

Two more people were arrested after the match when fans jumped onto railway tracks in a bid to stop a train from Barnsley to Sheffield before it had started moving.

Barnsley, which plays in the second-tier League Championship, was scouring through video footage of the incident on Wednesday.

"The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand," Barnsley said. "A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident."

Violence also overshadowed a League Cup match in August, leading both West Ham and Millwall to be charged by the Football Association. Fans from the London rivals clashed with each other and police before, during and after the game at Upton Park. One man was stabbed, there were several pitch invasions and black players on each side said they were subjected to racial abuse.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Absolute scum. I wonder if they'll get as bad a press as we did in Athens?

Why on earth did it all kick off at a League Cup game against lower league opposition? There should be real reason for anomosity there.

Another bit of coverage of it; but not really getting huge amounts. I only spotted it now, and realised from this thread there's been one or two other mentions of it. Does make you suspect, if it was LFC, it'd be everywhere.

Manchester United will be at the centre of an FA and police investigation after rampaging supporters brought a sour note to their Carling Cup fourth-round victory at Oakwell last night.

Not for the first time in this competition this season, the football played second fiddle to the thuggery of mindless supporters. Barnsley and South Yorkshire Police both launched investigations last night after United fans stormed the catering outlets in the concourse of the North Stand where the 4,000-strong travelling supporters were seated. The tills were looted and all the stock was taken as staff fled in fear.

Food and drinks were strewn everywhere and police said eight fans had been arrested. Witnesses were interviewed last night and the FA is expected to launch its own inquiry into the disgraceful scenes today. “We have launched a full investigation,” a Barnsley spokesman said.

The chaos, which was reminiscent of the trouble at the second-round match between West Ham United and Millwall at Upton Park in August, did not end there, however.

United fans pelted police, some of whom had dogs with them, and stewards with missiles as they lined up in front of the away end towards the end of the second half and the game was twice held up as two fans ran on to the pitch, with stewards initially reluctant to remove them

sky news said that the arrested came from manchester, so it is slanderous to presume that these thugs were man u fans.

Seven people have been arrested after fans clashed at a Premier League football match on Saturday.

Police said violence erupted before the game between Birmingham City and Manchester United, with further clashes at half-time.

Officers were sent to control fans during both incidents at Birmingham's St Andrews Stadium.

Earlier this season, 19 people were charged over violence at Birmingham's match with Aston Villa.

Following Saturday's game, a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "There were two separate incidents - one just before the game and one during half time and a number of officers have been deployed."

I come from Barnsley (in fact I may have been in the same cell they were taken to when I was done fro D&D. Lol) and I can confirm we do mostly hate UTD.

We have quite a few United fans too unfortunately, but everyone who doesn't support 'em hates 'em.

But I think that's the case for most of the country
