Teams score from corners and free kicks all the time - most of them against the man to man marking system, but I don't ever see anyone bang on about the faults of that particular system.
People don't like change it's a fact, simple as that. Personally I prefer the zonal marking system, it's proven that it works when implemented properly.
The only reason zonal marking at set-pieces is more difficult for many players to get used to is because it's not the standard. It is making the transition from man-to-man to zonal that is difficult, it's not that zonal is inherently tactically demanding.
Both systems work when implemented correctly. They just have slightly different pros and cons.
