Sir Alex Ferguson on thin ice in carrying on criticism of referees

    • United's manager rails again but may escape FA censure
    • Referee defends sending-off of Darren Fletcher

Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to escape sanction from the Football Association following his latest outburst against match officials after the Manchester United manager criticised Mark Clattenburg for his performance during the Premier League champions' 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on Saturday night.

The FA confirmed yesterday it was looking into Ferguson's post-match comments but it is understood the United manager is unlikely to be charged and so will not trigger the two-match touchline ban that was suspended until the end of next season.

Ferguson, who was told to treat match officials with more respect after his verbal attack on Alan Wiley in October, was furious with Clattenburg's decision to award a second yellow card to Darren Fletcher late on at St Andrew's. He described the dismissal as "absolutely ridiculous" and suggested that Clattenburg, who defended his decision to send off Fletcher, had previously been more lenient with players at other clubs.

"I've not seen a softer sending-off in a long time," Ferguson said. "It was absolutely ridiculous. I watched Mark Clattenburg when he was in charge of the Arsenal v Tottenham game [in October last year]. In that match you had to have somebody hit by an axe before there was a booking. But he sends a player off for that here. For a start he's not that kind of player. He clips the boy. The boy actually stumbles. He didn't even go down. I think it was a terribly soft sending-off, I really do."

Ferguson, who in November was given a four-match ban – half of it suspended – for his comments about Wiley not being fit enough to referee in the Premier League, would appear to be skating on thin ice with his constant criticism of officials even if he is not punished this time.

"The FA have noted Sir Alex Ferguson's comments about the match official after the Birmingham City-Manchester United match and will consider whether this is a matter for their governance and disciplinary department today," said an FA spokesman. Clattenburg, however, remains adamant that he was correct to dismiss Fletcher. The referee recalled the stern verbal warning he gave the United midfielder for dissent before issuing a first yellow card and suggested that Fletcher's foul on Cameron Jerome, in the 84th minute, was deliberate.

"It's a second yellow card," said Clattenburg. "He was bollocked for dissent and then he got cautioned for a foul and then he cynically just trips him [Jerome]."

While United flew to Doha yesterday for training until Thursday West Midlands police have confirmed that seven people were arrested after clashes between Birmingham and Manchester United supporters before and during the match.

It's brilliant, he's going into meltdown. Basically he's not had to cope with this for about 20 years. Now his team are turd and losing fairly often, he can't deal with it and blames it all on the refs. People have this bull**** idea of him being a good bloke, a magnanimous, sporting chap....well, it's ****ing easy to be sporting when you win all the time. What an appalling cunt he is.

I watched that match. He put in about 3 bad challenges BEFORE his first yellow and was then spoken to twice at length after which he continued to tackle poorly until he got sent off. It was a total acceptable sending off and something Mascha does often that we don't complain about and Rafa wouldn't defend.

I knew you would be first to respond Shaggy. I agree though.

He's never launched a sustained campaign on any of the issues he goes on about now when it would purely in the interests of the game. He is a manipulative, bullying arse at least when it comes to his work.

For a while cynical challenges by midfielders and fullbacks high up the pitch have been a de facto part of United's defensive plan on the basis that they are unlikley to result in sendings off - when it back fired Fergie was bound to lash out.

Every ****ing game he criticises the referee at the moment. It's ridiculous that he continuously gets away with it.

Well maybe he'd stop doing it if he didn't always get away with it. The FA have to do punish him every time, not just once in a while.

He is taking the piss - he is doing it on purpose, he is pushing the fa as far as he can. I hate the ****er - I can't wait for the day he finally ****s off from football tho I am not looking forward the inevitable fanfare and media coverage love in when it finally happens.

United look so shaky at the moment - it's such a shame that we are in such a mess cause we could have really punished them this season.

Slowly though, ever since the rafa rant, we are starting to see bits of the media having little bites at him - he's slowly becoming not untouchable and i think he knows it,

                      Touchable?

The FA do nothing about anything he does unless it's so blatent and personal they can't hide away from the matter. The FA are a disgrace when it comes to Ferguson.

The problem is the F.A are a bunch of spineless cowards. We remember what happened last week, he called 5 minutes of extra time "an insult to the players" and got 6 the next game. Now it's basically guaranteed that the next time their player should get a red card, the ref will bottle it. They always do, it's how he works.
