In my opinion 2nd 3rd and 4th shouldn't warrant a place in the Champions League, it should just be for Champion only, you would then have a Europa League worth winning because of the high level of teams that would be involved and bring back the cup winners cup for the remainder, that way restoring the importance of winning domestic cup competitions.

Why not **** off the idea of a playoff and have a lottery system instead? And, as there's no point limiting it to teams who won't embarass themselves, may as well include Championship teams or lower also.

The CL was only created to make more money and avoiding that the big clubs in Europe (and ourselves included!!) did not break out of UEFA and create the europe league instead.
I must say I enjoy watching the CL as it is the biggest in europe contesting, but I wouldn't mind there being two competitions for that. The cup winners cup was always a boring competition though.Comment

I think the Champions League is great in it's current format. Leave it alone. And if it was restricted to only the champions of each country, you'd be missing out some of Europe's elite teams every season.Comment

The Champions league is a mockery already as it isn't a Champions league is it? That said it is a good tournament as every year the cream rises to the top and that's as it should be. I don't necessarily think the play off idea is as bad as is being mooted here though, like Scratch I think 4th-7th isn't much difference so why not mix it up a bit? Its probably the only chance teams like spurs, villa etc will have of getting there and to be honest it could well be our only hope in a few years if things keep progressing as they are.
Its not ideal but neither is the current format and I would hazard a guess that we are all loathe to change it as currently it suits our purposes.
Ask the same question after we finish 5th for a few seasons.

Scratch: Still can't get my head around the idea that the team in 4th isn't likely to be any better than the team in 7th. Following that through, who's to say the champions are any better than the team in 4th?
The idea of creating a play-off format to keep things interesting etc is part of the same thinking that has brought us teams playing music when they score. There is nothing wrong with the game of football, it doesn't need pissing around with to make it more entertaining.
