So what happens if they get an injury in the first minute? The player has to be available when needed, if he's on the bench otherwise what's the point?

It's a psychological move and even if Keita or whoever gets an injury, they can only put 3 players on, doesn't mean he'll be forced to play. Still, if he's forced to play, the risks that he breaks down again are reduced because he's not playing the whole match. Makes perfect sense.
