So, who said Cristiano Ronaldo wasnt worth £80m then?

Real Madrid have already recouped more than €100 million in Cristiano Ronaldo's first season in shirt sales, having sold over one million CR9 shirts - just in the city of Madrid, reports Portuguese publication A Bola

The offical Real Madrid store in the Bernabeu and the small outfit in the Plaza del Sol are flooded by thousands of fans daily, both Spaniards and visitors from every corner of the world, and those Madridistas regularly buy the shirt of their favourite player.

Cristiano Ronaldo's shirt has been the top seller and, if the figures are accurate, Los Blancos will have already covered Ronaldo's world record transfer fee of €94m through shirt sales alone - and that is just in the first year of his contract.

Madrid have seen names like Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham printed on their shirts, but according to Madrid officials, Cristiano Ronaldo's name is like nothing they have ever seen in terms of sale revenues.

The Madrid management estimate that they have sold over 1.2 million shirts solely in the Spanish capital. Multiplying that figure by the going rate for a shirt of €85 pushes earnings over €100m.
    Unbelievable stuff.

      Absolutely staggering stuff, isnt it?

Obviously his wages will be high, but in terms of transfer fee - he's paid for himself already.

It's absolutely unbelievable. Transfer fee already paid for and more, in less time than it takes to complete a season.

well if he has made that money in profit for madrid off those shirts maybe

          but not yet.

its only a matter of time though.

madrid are the masters of this though arent they.

It would be more interesting if the overall shirt sales and change from last year was included. I have a deep routed suspicion of these sort of reports. It's a bit like when papers were claiming that Inamoto at Arsenal was making them £30m a year which you would think would have persuaded them to pay the fee to keep him.

oh and the other thing is some of those people may well have bought kaka shirts or something else so are thy new sales.

              its a bit headliney

i would imagine he will pay for himself in some way over the course of the contract it might just be transfer fee etc.

How much does it cost to manufacture a shirt and sell it? And how much does Ronaldo himself pocket from a single shirt? They are making loads of money of him though.
                  * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

                    Typical media bollocks.

Nothing more than a Madrid press statement disgused as 'news'

Where's the audited figures on the actual shirts sold?

Not having a go at the original poster.

ah right what i mean is say you would buy a mascher shirt but then we sign agurero so you go and buy an agurero shirt.

in reality the club havent made any more money than it would do before.

not sure how to work it out well i have a few ideas but selling lots of shirts for a new player doesnt mean its money that would not have been spent anyway

is that better? or have i babbled again

Are you trying to say that people would've bought a Madrid shirt anyway, regardless of CR?

If so, partly yes - but by dividing up the numbers between different players' shirt sales, you can see who the biggest draw is - and clearly CR has outsold everyone else in their history - in less than one full season.

What is funny is that there was a bit kerfuffle at the start of the season, with Madrid asking him to have 'C RONALDO' on the back of his shirt, cos they were worried that people who'd previously bought a 'RONALDO 9' shirt from the brazilian ronaldo's time at Madrid, wouldnt bother buying a new one for Greasy Ronaldo.

                        Obviously plenty have though.

I think his point is if say 2 million people buy real shirts every year, presumably up until now those that went for names had other players names on them. In order for it to count as repaying the fee for Ronaldo it would have to mean that rather than 1 million people switching from other players names to Ronaldo he was bringing in 1 million additional shirt sales.

Well yes, you could look at it from that point of view, but it's gonna be a mixed bag IMO. Some would've bought a shirt anyway. Others perhaps not.

There are always gonna be fans who would need a massive superstar name to persuade them to buy a shirt that they otherwise wouldnt bother with.

Remember the likes of Ravanelli at Boro? Until he came along, boro fans had the choice of people like Craig Hignett to have put on their shirts I think it's fair to say that many wouldnt have been arsed with Hignett, but got their wallets out for Ravanelli

Well not necessarily, no - if you really want to be pedantic

I bet he WILL easily pay back his fee via shirt sales though.

Even at £80m, it was a piece of marketing genius by Madrid - not to mention the massive amount of football quality he brings to them.
