He had all the players there at a training camp and could have got them together and spoke to each player face to face and then announced the squad.

Did he really have a "storming season"? I always doubt it when people say this, I can't say I saw them much this season, but he's always reported as being amazing for them this season. Whenever I did they were all utter, utter ****e. Was he really that good? Honest question. Upson was another one.

Whenever I saw him he looked good. The thing is though that performing well in a relegation battle is very different to what is required at international level when, like it or not, England will often be viewed as favourites and will almost always have to win games.

He really stood out for West Ham at times but given how bad their season was he can't have been quite as awesome as some make out. That said it's very difficult to win games on your own from deep midfield positions - it requires other players on your wavelength.

Parker's decent IMO but he gives away far too many free kicks and he'd be a liability in the World Cup in that sense.

That is potentially a very sound argument. Still think that the midfield options we have are a bit lightweight. Especially as none of them are natural holding players really. Only Carrick and Barry regularly even play in deep lying roles and at club level both operate best with a more robust partner.

But unless it's a last minute thing due to concerns over King's fitness or something, it would be a bit strange considering he has never played for England, and was given no game time over the two friendlies.

But he has had a very good season so would agree he deserves it in that sense.

exactly - ok i understand that you want to send the players home for a day or two with their familes and a bit of rest before they fly off to south africa.....but i reckon he had a pretty much chosen his squad - he even said before the game on sunday he had picked 20 - leaving 8 players fighting for 3 places. - Out of those 8 i reckon he had a fair few he knew were never going. So if on Sunday after the game and before the fly out - he can't pick the 23 (which im sure he could off) i reckon he could have let those go who were in, and then say to the 8 i'm unsure can you stick around for a day while i make up mind, check on barry's fitness etc etc - I'm sure every single one of them would and if any didn't want to stay well they make the decision for him.
