KILMARNOCK hope to secure the signing of Mohamed Sissoko in the next 48 hours.
The French central defender has been on trial at Rugby Park and last night manager Mixu Paatelainen said: "We've very close but there are things still to be sorted.
"Hopefully that will be done by the end of this week."
Paatelainen, who made Portuguese midfielder David Silva his first signing, is also keen to add firepower to his squad.
He said: "We have strikers on trial but so far haven't found what we are after. We will keep searching."
Killie will start the season minus defender Tim Clancy after dropping their appeal against his two-match ban.
The Irishman was convicted on video evidence after referee Iain Brines failed to see him stamping on striker Morten Rasmussen during the 3-0 Scottish Cup defeat by Celtic in March.
Clancy received an automatic one-match suspension and was banned for a second game for exceeding the points threshold.
He will miss the opening-day trip to face Rangers a week on Saturday and the home clash with Motherwell.

Did he play against us last season for Benfica? Can't remember him. Saw him in the World Cup and he didn't make much of an impression although he wasn't first choice. I imagine he'll anchor their midfield instead of Mikel and let Essien get forward a bit more?

cant remember him, but the little i know of him is that he is very similar to essien and probably more mobile than essien so not sure a holding role a la mascherano would suit.

Maybe questions over essiens long term fitness?

He's a regular in the brazil squads. He's always involved for them and seems to do quite well. Def a player with alot of potential but Iv seen him have good games and bad games for Brazil
