Its not anonymous for a reason, people abused it when it was, spammed it, pretended to be other posters and so on.

However, all reported posts are dealt with confidentially and mods do not prejudice on the basis of who reported something. We may not agree with the reportee's viewpoint, and very rarely do we reply to them directly, but anything reported is always looked at and addressed in accordance with the site's rules. In this case a report would simply have alerted us to the existence of the initial, obviously out of line posts.

We've had 430 reports in the last 3 years.

A lot of people do use pm's instead for various issues, but the report button opens a thread in a section of the mod forum so all of us can see there could be a problem with something.

In all seriousness, reported posts are simple enough for mods to ignore if they disagree. However if something isn't reported and we don't chance upon it of our own accord then we don't even have that choice, and whatever is happening that shouldn't may continue unchecked. I probably wouldn't even have opened this thread tonight had I not seen the report we did eventually get. So please do use it when necessary
