Phil Brown has confirmed holding talks with Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese over the vacant manager's job.

Brown, out of work since leaving Hull City earlier this year, met Cortese on Monday to discuss succeeding Alan Pardew.

Brown said: 'It was very interesting, there's a very, very ambitious board. It is an ambitious club and certainly one that does interest me.'

'I met with Nicola and there was a spark between us and you need a good relationship with your chairman, although I suppose I should call her the chairwoman. I think she liked what she saw and the feeling was certainly phenomenally mutual.'

Scunthorpe's Nigel Adkins and Paul Hart have also been linked with the job.
