If we're talking dutch masters then that great team of the late '80s had a third truly awesome player Frank Rijkaard.
Perhaps rightly not fondly remembered for his gobbing on Voller at the 1990 WC but he was an excellent holding midfielder and really helped Gullit and Van Basten in that team.James Philip Milner Fanclub #1

England had many great players. I think they can all be classed as 'underrated' because of the failures of the England team as a whole, I don't think it necessarily reflects a lack of talent on an individual level.Originally posted by Tee View Post
He will always be 'underrated' because of his England performances unfortunately.
My dad was always arguing with me about the likes of Bobby Charlton and how great they were but I don't think they were any better than the Gascoigne's, Barnes' and the Hoddle's of this world. Are we winning?

How about Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola? Great players. Saw them play in the flesh and they were wonderful. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Both were quality. IIRC there was a slight chance of Guardiola coming to us but he ended up in Serie A to end his career. Great player.
Rivaldo anyone? Genius who ended up being remembered as a cunt ala Rijkaard."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

That's because he was ****ing **** in the Champions League! I put him in the overrated thread. Great against Sunderland, Norwich et al - miles from being a true great and when put up against the best, he disappeared.Originally posted by NigelLG View PostI think Cantona was a brilliant player, and terribly underrated outside these shores. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

As with the already mentioned John Barnes, Beardsley was utterly superb, one of the best '2nd strikers'/forwards i've seen and yet, younger fans of today will know of Lineker, they'll mention Shearer and even Sheringham perhaps, but Beardsley seems to have been forgotten.
If you asked Gary Lineker how many of his 48 England goals he owes to Beardsley, i think it'd be a relatively high percentage. Beardo was legendary.

Seen him do some amazing things though, but yeah, in hindsight I think you're right. Are we winning?

Another one who has slipped under the radar a bit is Lothar Matthäus who was utterly fantastic in the 1990 WC.
Went **** when he got older and moved into defence but in his pomp there wasn't a better box-to-box midfielder in the world.James Philip Milner Fanclub #1
