Wayne Rooney's imminent departure from Manchester United will stun fans but will come as no surprise to his team-mates.

Rooney’s relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson, just like David Beckham and numerous other high-profile United players before him, has broken down beyond all repair.

Fergie and Rooney have hardly exchanged a word in the past month, following lurid revelations the United striker slept with a prostitute behind wife Coleen’s back.

United players and Fergie’s backroom staff have looked on in astonishment as Rooney and Fergie’s once close relationship has deteriorated to such an extent they are no longer on speaking terms.


United chief executive David Gill yesterday dismissed as “nonsense” claims that Rooney would be sold when the transfer window re-opens in January, following the player’s spectacular fall from grace.

“To suggest Wayne Rooney will be sold in January is nonsense,” said a United spokesman, having contacted Gill over the issue of Rooney’s future.

But the reality is that Rooney is on the verge of leaving United, the latest of their iconic players to fall foul of Fergie and his notoriously combustible temper.

Rooney feels Fergie, rather than protecting him from the furore that erupted following the allegations, hung him out to dry by dropping him in recent weeks under the guise of an ankle injury.

And Rooney wasted no time in exacting his revenge on Fergie by publicly contradicting his manager’s ankle injury story last week, an act of defiance which proved the point of no return for the feuding pair.

With Rooney adamant he will leave at the earliest possible opportunity in January, United must now begin the process of getting the best possible price for their £50million-rated prized asset.

Despite his recent poor form, Rooney remains one of the most coveted strikers in world football, with Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as United’s Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, ready to bid for him.

Rooney’s poor World Cup showing for England in South Africa, after Fergie rushed him back too early from injury towards the end of last season, has not diminished his value in the transfer market.

And City are understood to be prepared to pay whatever it takes to land Rooney, who could earn a staggering £300,000-a-week by defecting across Manchester to United’s local rivals.

With Rooney determined to force through a move, the unthinkable could happen for United - being forced to sell their star striker to City or risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires at the end of next season.

United could use that scenario to their advantage, but forcing as much money out of City as possible for Rooney, perhaps even eclipsing the world record fee of £80m Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The relationship between Rooney and Fergie has been strained for some time, but matters came to a head following newspaper claims that Rooney had cheated on wife Coleen with a prostitute while she was pregnant.

Fergie left Rooney out of United’s trip to his former club Everton on September 11, ostensibly because of the inevitable abuse the striker would be subjected to at Goodison Park, following the sex scandal.

And when Rooney was left out of United’s Champions League tie away at Valencia and their Premier League trip to Sunderland, Fergie claimed it was because the player had an ankle injury.

But Rooney enraged Fergie by blowing that cover-up story after England’s 0-0 draw with Montenegro last Tuesday, insisting he had not had an ankle injury all season.

Furious Fergie put Rooney on the bench for Saturday’s game with West Brom and once he came on for the final 19 minutes, he strolled through the closing stages as United lurched to a 2-2 draw.

Rooney was incensed that he was only a sub, despite having played 90 minutes for England at Wembley, feeling the decision was yet again taken to punish him.

TV and radio reporters were banned from asking Fergie any questions about Rooney after the game, a clear sign of United’s sensitivity over the fall-out and the huge repercussions that will inevitably follow.

Rooney alluded to his dismay with Fergie in a recent interview when he said: “I want to play in all the big games but I don’t know if I’ll get picked.

“I’ve missed a few games recently and if you don’t play, you don’t get that match fitness. At the beginning of the season I was playing and felt I was getting my fitness back, but it’s a lot different when you’re not playing.

It is understood the Old Trafford dressing room is split over the fall-out between Fergie and Rooney, with some players siding with their boss, while others are backing Rooney.

There are those who buy into Fergie’s mantra that no player is bigger than United and that if Rooney wants out, it is in the best interests of the club that he goes, despite the forward’s phenomenal talent.

Fergie is known to be exasperated at the scale of the attention focused on Rooney, believing it to be to the detriment of United, just as it was with Beckham, who left Old Trafford in acrimonious circumstances.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has already been quoted as saying “I’d love to work with Rooney”, less than a week after United claimed they were under no pressure to sell players, despite posting a record loss of £83.6m.

Beckham was sold to Real Madrid for £25m in 2003 after his relationship with Fergie broke down and Rooney is heading for the same fate as the former England captain, although he is determined to leave on his terms.
