Spurs make £26m bid for Llorente
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp bids £26m for Athletic Bilbao striker Llorente
Harry Redknapp has acted quickly to head off a renewed challenge from Liverpool for Spain's Fernando Llorente by making an astonishing £26million bid for the Athletic Bilbao striker.
The Tottenham Hotspur manager, also linked with Newcastle's Andy Carroll, is understood to have made Llorente his top target in a deal which could go through before the transfer window closes at 11pm tomorrow.
One complication is that there could be competition from Chelsea if they fail to persuade Liverpool to part with Fernando Torres.
Bilbao president Fernando Garcia Macua has continually rebuffed efforts to prise Llorente away from his club. Macua is up for re-election this summer and knows it would damage his chances of a further term if fans' hero Llorente left.
But Spurs are aware of an escape clause in the player's contract and have made an opening bid in the hope of testing the water.
Following the signing of Luis Suarez, Liverpool were banking on Torres forming a strike-force with the Uruguay international and have turned down his transfer request, insisting he will honour his contract.

Think he's called Joe Lewis.
He's a billionaire living in the Bahamas.
It'll be on the net somewhere.
