        SKRTEL: TORRES COULD REGRET MOVE
        Posted 02/02/11

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel says Fernando Torres' exit came as "no surprise", but feels he could end up regretting his move to Chelsea.

The Spanish striker sent shockwaves through Anfield on transfer deadline day when he completed a £50million move to the Blues on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

But Skrtel, while admitting he saw Torres' departure coming, believes the former fans' favourite could lament leaving Merseyside in the future.

"I expected it," Skrtel told isport.blesk.cz.

"There had been plenty of talk for a long time before and when he was not training with us in the last two days, nor was he in the training centre, the speculation just seemed to come true.

"We all feel sorry because he's a player of world class ability but, to be honest, it was no surprise (to see him go).

"I wish him all the best but do not wish any success to Chelsea. Maybe Fernando will regret making this step sometime in the future."

Liverpool have recently enjoyed an encouraging run of results after a miserable start to the season, and Skrtel believes it was that period of turmoil that pushed Torres towards the door.

He said: "There were some hints of him leaving already in the summer when Chelsea claimed interest in him but he agreed with Liverpool on staying.

"However, this season has not been going according to our wishes and expectations and that convinced him that it is the right time to move elsewhere. This is how he explained it to us."

Torres is poised for his Chelsea debut against his former club at the Bridge on Sunday, and Skrtel is determined to keep his ex-colleague off the scoresheet.

"It will be different because so far I have been playing against him only in training," he added.

"I hope he appears on the pitch and, since Chelsea wanted him so much, it is very likely that he will.

"I'm looking forward and firmly believe I won't let him score."

While acknowledging Liverpool will miss the striker, Skrtel is confident new signings Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez can plug the gap left by the Spaniard.

"Such a player would be missed at every club, that's for sure," he said. "On the other hand, we have captured Suarez and Carroll.

"I believe these two will replace him and we will be at least as strong as we were with Nando."

Just popped on to Wiki to have a look at his goal record.

He so could've become a legend with us. I thought he'd smash all of our goal records. I've just looked at his appearance table and it makes me sick.

I really thought that he'd go down as a hero. Sickening stuff. Really, really ****ing sick. I still can't get my head around this. I loved Torres for 3.5 years and I loved Fowler for seven years - and this hurts a lot more. Well, it baffles me more anyway.

I'm on the cusp of being over it now. Seeing that colossus introduced to the crowd tonight - no defender is going to bully him - and Suarez with his skill, first touch, pace and flicks - we might just have been strengthened.

I was so ****ing sick of hearing how he was going to be leaving. He's gone now, thank ****. We can concentrate on who's staying and who wants to play for us.

Nando died on Monday......at least his soul did.

He's a plastic chav robot now.

If he had've left in the summer to go to Barcelona or the likes, i would've been thanking him for the memories and tbh, would've still wanted to see him do well.

He jumped ship, he doesn't care about LFC, He can **** right off.

im over it, but I'll enjoy calling him a name every now and then out of disgust. just like owen. pair of cunts basically. and after seeing them for who they really are, im glad they have left.

but look. nando was here as a pro. he only came to win the top trophies. previous ownership saw to that and this is hopefully the last wound from that disastrous period for us.

but nando wont regret the move as he didnt come to cement a place in our hearts. he came to win the league and the CL. thats what he really wants. its how he thinks chelsea are a big club. he thinks for the here and now and where to position himself to get a great chance of winning them. not that they are what we in england call a big club.

i think he was genuine in his first 2 years but i also think it was too much to take for the young guy when the wheels came off. so because he was here to compete at the very top, our implosion just ate away at him until he felt numb towards us. yes he's grateful but he just fell out of love with the club due to that long, painful experience. just like a breakup of a long term relationship.

i've moved on and am happy. i liken the transfers to seeing us having gone from a supermodel to a stunner porn star. for sure there'll be fewer that are jealous of us but we're going to have a hell of a lot more fun with these two than with nando.

I know mate, and on Monday we saw a different side to him. A side that none of us thought existed.

I was thinking earlier about an article which was published in the summer - something along the lines of the Benitez era being a golden one. So true.

Between 2004-2009 I had the best years of my life following LFC (I'm 26). In the last few seasons we've gone from winning trophies to being nowhere challenging for anything. We've also lost Rafa, Arbeloa, Hyypia, Riise, Alonso, Mascherano, Riera, Benayoun, and Torres.

Heck we've even lost players like Insua, Crouch and Bellamy - who would all make an improvement to our current squad.

That's without mentioning Hamman, Finnan and Garcia who were great players but clearly past it now. Aquilani is on loan FFS.

Whoever wrote that article was completely spot on. It was a golden era.

I agree with most of this.

I'm going to convince myself that Torres and Suarez wouldn't have worked as a partnership. They looked quite similair in a way. Yeah, deffo wouldn't have worked.
