He's not as bad as most make out and he'd be a decent 'plan B' which Brendan hasn't had this season... In some games, he'd certainly be more suited to 'plan A' against teams like Stoke where he'd be in fight with the centre backs from the first minute...

If he can train hard, work hard and get on the end of some crosses next season, I think he'd give defenders a lot to think about in some games...

Andy Carroll is NOT expecting to be back at Newcastle United next season.

The Chronicle understands that while United will always hold a special place in his heart, Carroll is not building up his hopes of being back at St James’ Park.

And despite talk that the Magpies will submit a bid for his services this summer, the Geordie striker is planning for nothing else but a return to Anfield for pre-season training in July.

The Teams lad would obviously be open to interest to his boyhood team, however, with West Ham unable to afford the £17m fee agreed at the start of his current loan spell, 24-year-old Carroll believes that returning to Anfield is the best course of action next season.

A source close to Carroll – who has three years left on his Liverpool contract – told the Chronicle: “Andy is realistic about next season.

“He is not expecting to be at Newcastle or West Ham.

“He’s prepared to go back to Liverpool and fight for his place.

“Andy feels there is still some unfinished business at Liverpool and wants to continue his good rapport with the Kop.”

There was talk of a reduced £10m bid from the Hammers over the weekend, but Liverpool won’t budge on the figure set last August.

Newcastle are also unlikely to pay the £17m fee for the player they recouped £35m for back in January 2011.

Speculation has also been rife that United will slap in a cheeky bid of around £7-10m for the England international, but there has been no contact between Liverpool or United since last summer.

It was then that Brendan Rodgers told Carroll he wasn’t part of his plans during the early days of his reign at Liverpool.

But the same can be said for both Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson and the duo have still featured prominently this term.

Rodgers’ stance has not changed on Carroll, who has six goals for the Hammers this term, but the power is in the hands of the big Geordie centre-forward.

And he is prepared to work hard and battle for his place, starting in pre-season.

There is a theory that Carroll won’t fit into Liverpool’s style of play with the quick passing movement under Rodgers not deemed suitable for the Geordie boy’s presence, but the former Newcastle youth team striker feels he can fit into any system – and his recent performances have underlined he can be just as effective with his feet than his head.

Liverpool won’t want a £90,000-per-week striker on the bench of course, but Rodgers will be under pressure to deliver a top-four finish next season and challenge for both domestic cups.

Carroll is currently house hunting on Merseyside ahead of his move back to the North West and, although he is full of respect for Sam Allardyce at West Ham, he knows the East End club can’t afford to stump up the fee.

The Hammers have already gone public with fears that the new financial fair play rules will scupper a bid to bring the ex-Toon ace to the capital.

Carroll still has plenty of fans on the red half of Merseyside who have fond memories of his winning goal at Wembley against Everton in the FA Cup semi-final last season.

Allardyce cut a glum figure on the Carroll deal and recently said: “In one fell swoop the financial restrictions mean Andy Carroll can't sign for us from Liverpool because it's too expensive, even if he wanted to.”

Newcastle would have to break their wage structure to afford Carroll’s salary too, and with emphasis set to be on bolstering the squad at United next season, such expenditure is unrealistic.

Both Alan Pardew and Derek Llambias have gone public on their admiration for Carroll in the last six months.

But unless they can broker what would be deemed a bargain fee for the striker, United will look elsewhere.
