I wouldn't say Messi has any performance issues at all in big games so I don't understand why this has been raised

Messi is already amongst the best of all time. If he keeps this up until he's 30 then he will surpass the rest.

Young Messi is doing it week in week out, in the hardest league in the world. A quick glance at Pele's career shows that he only played in a poor Brazilian league & a even worse American one.

Teams are all generally much better too now. How often do you see 8, 9, 10 nil scorelines in international football? A scoreline that used to be quite regularly seen, especially in qualifiers.

Irrespective of the quality of football, the World cup is the biggest stage and he needs to perform there. Previous world cup he had the disadvantage of being managed by a crazy coke addict.
Next world cup, hopefully he wont have that disadvantage. Argentina may not be Spain but they are not a bad team. If he inspires that team to a final appearance, he can claim his place among Pele, Maradona and Zidane.
But that is exactly the point surely - factor he has no control over mean he may never perform in the way people want. Actually at the last world cup I though Messi was one of the best players but being in a poorly organised team he had no chance of winning it. The Argentinian teams Marradonna played in may at times have been somewhat limited but they were well organised and gave him a good platform on which to perform. Seems to me that is just luck rather than a reflection of his abilities.

so only when messi drags a team that obviously is no longer a top rate team into a world cup final can he be classed as world class??!!?

pele, maradona and zidane all played and won world cups in teams that were filled with top class (great if you will) players from keeper to strikers. but because messi couldnt take a team that had english championship based players in it to the final, you judge him as not world class?

Dont most people say Maradonna won the world cup single handedly. plus i dont think people are saying he needs to win it, people are just saying he needs to show he can with a national team. wouldn't mind seeing it with a team other than barca too...

Yeah, but they're wrong. They still had a handful of other outstanding players, and anyway, nobody can truly win a game of football single handed.

He's a good player this Messi.

I think if Best had won or even just been outstanding at the World Cup (i.e. had he played for a country capable of competing for it) he'd be more highly rated than he is. But he'd also be more highly rated had Man United won more titles and European Cups when he played there.

So for Messi, like anyone else, it's about what he achieves over the course of his career, whether that's at international or club level. The best players win things, sometimes despite who they're playing with.

Given that Messi doesn't come from a minnow nation in international football then it's reasonable to say he should be one of the biggest stars in at least one World Cup finals otherwise people will always be able to say he underperformed on the biggest stage. If that happens he can rightly be regarded as one of the most talented players but that's not quite the same as true greatness.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Scored again tonight. His 48th goal of the season (spanish record apparently) with at least 10 games left to play....

Look at these for some numbers:

Good chance he'll hit 60 goals by close of season.
