Parker Scoops Football Writers Player of the Year

A worthy winner I would say, even if in a season remembered for a lack of real, top quality

    SCOTT PARKER WINS FWA AWARD

West Ham midfielder Scott Parker has been voted 2011 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association.

In what was one of the closest contests of recent seasons, Parker topped the poll of journalists ahead of Tottenham winger Gareth Bale, who was last week named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year.

The England international - who started his career at Charlton before spells with Chelsea and Newcastle ahead of joining the Irons in 2007 - will receive the prestigious accolade, which has been running since 1948, at a gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 12.

FWA chairman Steve Bates, chief football writer at The People said: "Scott Parker has been so consistent this season with his performances in a West Ham team battling for Barclays Premier League survival and as such has forced himself back into the England national set-up.

"He has been an inspirational figure for the Irons and hopefully his professionalism will be rewarded with West Ham staying up at the end of the season.

"In what was one of the tightest votes of recent seasons, Scott is certainly a worthy winner and follows in the footsteps of a long line of superb footballers who have been given this prestigious honour."

I think it is fitting for what has been poor season all round, no stand out teams or players. A good but not great player winning player of the season and a United sub winning the golden boot.

I think it is positive for ourselves as we are nowhere near as far behind and some in the media would have you believe.

worthy winner, yet its all the media that seem to be spunking over Bale as the greatest player in the world ever so seems a bit strange that he didn;t win t.

          A massive come down.

          2001–02 France Robert Pirès Arsenal
          2002–03 France Thierry Henry Arsenal
          2003–04 France Thierry Henry Arsenal
          2004–05 England Frank Lampard Chelsea
          2005–06 France Thierry Henry Arsenal
2006–07 Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester United
2007–08 Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester United
          2008–09 England Steven Gerrard Liverpool
2009–10 England Wayne Rooney Manchester United

Guess it sums up the state of the league at the moment, he's a decent player and not much else.

Fully deserved. Cracking player and Captain.

Nobody really gave a **** about Parker before Carlton Cole credited him with inspiring their second-half performance at West Brom. Personally, I took Cole's words as a not too subtle dig at Arvam Grant, but before you knew it Parker had been named Player of the Month and this end result was almost inevitable. Scott Parker the best player in the league this season, you are ****ing kidding me.

I do love Dalglish and i agree with what he says about Parker, but:

Kenny Dalglish; Liverpool, 1979 and 1983 - Vidic. "I like the claims of Luca Modric, but believe the player of the year should be part of a team, and inspire a team, that is winning something. So you look at Arsenal and Manchester United. For Arsenal, Van Persie and Fabregas haven’t played a full season, so you have to look at United. Hernandez has made a massive impact in a short space of time and scored an amazing amount of goals from few starts but, again, hasn’t played enough games. So I’m going for Vidic, because he has been a leader, and kept the captain’s armband even when Ferdinand returned. He has also played a vital role in the development of Smalling, and has already helped turn him into a top class Premier League performer."
Erm Nasri might have been worth a mention rather than simply disregarding these two?

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has backed the Football Writers Association's decision to make Scott Parker their player of the year.

Parker overcame Gareth Bale to be crowned winner of a prize that has been running since 1948. He is only the second West Ham player to receive the award, following in the footsteps of legendary England skipper Bobby Moore, and comes in a season when his club could well be relegated.

Ferguson has been dubious about the merits of such prizes ever since David Ginola won in Manchester United's 1999 Treble-winning year, a decision he still feels was "an insult" to the Old Trafford outfit at the time.

Centre-back Nemanja Vidic, winger Nani and striker Javier Hernandez have all enjoyed impressive campaigns for United, who remain in contention for a Premier League and Champions League double, and Ferguson could be forgiven for expressing similar sentiments now as he did 12 years ago.

However, the 69-year-old claims Parker deserves the honour and believes it makes a refreshing change, with Parker the first winner from outside the established 'big clubs' since Alan Shearer, then of Blackburn, won it in 1994.

"It is a good step forward to give it to a really good professional," said Ferguson.

"Scott Parker has certainly done a good job at West Ham. There is no doubt about that.

"He is probably the player who has driven them on and motivated them to still have a chance of staying up, even though they have a mountain to climb now.

"I remember when we won the Treble, David Ginola got it. I have nothing against him at all but it was an insult to Manchester United that it was felt not one United player had a better season than he did.

"It is nice to recognise someone outside the clubs who always get publicity like United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham."

"I think Nani has been a better player all season but then he goes down far to easy and Berbatov has scored a lot but then he doesn't do much more than that"

Out of interest, were you being ironic when you chose it or do you really have absolutely no idea what gracious means?
                              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
