    Mata

Liverpool, City and Manchester United show interest in Mata

After a very interesting trip to Valencia, a clearer picture of the finances and futures of the stars at the club have emerged. Valencia still has to service debts in the region of €500 milion. It is manageable as long as the team qualifies for the Champions League, but even when they do, they will still need to produce and re-pay around €20-25 milion in interest and debt: and the easiest way to do that is to sell players. Basically, that means everybody at Valencia is for sale, including Juan Mata. If a club comes in with a bid of 25-30 milion for Mata, Valencia are willing to sell, but nobody has lodged a bid with the club yet.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have contacted Mata`s representative (his father) and the trio have all expressed varying degrees of interest in the player`s situation. Mata`s new contract contains a buy out clause of €60 million, but that will always be negotiable if both the player and the club are willing to listen to offers.

What is clear is that Valencia expect an offer at some point and so far City and Liverpool seem to have shown the greatest level of interest in him (more visits from their scouts to Mestalla or more contact with his agent, for instance). At The moment it is agame of poker, but City and Liverpool are both under the impression that the transfer depends, not so much on the player - as they think they can convince him - but on Valencia and the final fee they will demand for him. Valencia plan on approaching Real Sociedad for Griezmann if it looks like Mata is leaving.

    PEPE REINA

As I Tweeted last week, Pepe Reina has decided to stay at Anfield because he believes in the new project. Liverpool are trying to buy a left back (Jose Enrique and Jose Angel of Sporting have been followed, but there are doubts over the defensive qualities of one and the maturity of the other, so no decision has been made), a centre back, a central midfielder and two wingers. Juan Mata could be one of those if Liverpool make an offer that is accepted by Valencia and if city abandon their interest in him. And at the moment, with no offer on the table from either club, that is a big if.

    THE OTHER BALAGUE

By the way, it seems the `other Balague` has been inventing names and stories– he`s the Balague that exists in the imaginations of the least reliable forums where the fantasies related to what they dream they heard him saying are published (the forums where they just make it up in other words). I guess the idea is to create illusion and hope for a better season but instead what they are managing to do is to reduce the little reputation those forums have left. Good luck with that! If you cannot find my words on this site, on my Twitter, in one of my columns with my name on the byline, then I have not said it. Not that it matters much in the big scheme of things, but at least let me say what I say and not what others claim I said.

So a load of speculation with no back up as usual.

Balague doesn't need people to misquote him as he does a pretty good job of discrediting himself.
    Oh I don't know.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

There is someone on RAWK, on Facebook and Twitter that have imagined things up in his name.

I thought he was intimating that people on forums, phone-in's etc., try to add credence to a rumour by stating that it's come from Balague when it hasn't. The "Other Balague" being a fictional reference by people, rather than an imposter using a false Twitter account. He went on to say that unless it's from his Twitter account, personal website, or his newspaper column then it's rubbish. I may be wrong.

Absolutely correct, in all fairness to GB he broke cover with Torres wanting to leave in January before anyone else.

I'm a big fan of the the phrase 'Imagining things up'. It has a childlike charm about it.

Unlike Balague who seems to spends most of his working days randomly imagining things up
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

He's talking a load of Ballague's by the sounds of things.
Klopp on LFC vs MUFC (March 9th 2016) - "This is why I love football. This is why we watched it when we were young. I can still not have enough of it."

He's broken several stories before anyone else. Has undoubted links to players and managers and yet people still won't have it that he might actually know what he's talking about. I don't really understand that attitude

He is probably the most respected Spanish football journalist out there. He gets a lot of exclusives with the best players because they respect him and know that he will do a good job.

I think that this is true he certainly has (and may still have) some inside info in what is going at the club. I think that it is certainly the case that his number of sources inside (or at least close to) the club have decreased over recent years. Hence to some extent he is living off his past reputation and exploiting the close relationship he has had in the past to give some of his opinions more credability than they deserve (as all journalists do).

The thing that I find most frustrating is that recently he will write articles saying x may or may not happen, and as a result they are non-articles, he is writing about something that he doesn't know enough about to write an article, which devalues his opinion when he really does have inside info. For example the Torres story he broke it and probably more than half the people who read it didn't believe it, if he'd broken that type of story a couple of years ago alot more people would have believed it.

Having said that he is probably better than most journalist but some of the recent non-articles lower his stock in the eyes of the many people.

He has so many caveats in what he says, and such a scattergun approach, that the law of averages tells me that some of the stuff he says will end up sticking sometimes. And quite often it won't. Just like any tabloid.
