I think it's not just about Platini's personal career ambitions but that there is a massive power struggle currently going on behind the scenes between different clubs within the European Clubs Association, and between the ECA, UEFA and FIFA. All we're seeing with comments about FFP and the international calendar is the tip of the iceberg or, to mix metaphors, a few warning shots and tactical manoeuvres.

There's bound to be some sort of fudge on FFP because both UEFA and FIFA need the clubs, especially when they're battling against each other, but not all the clubs in the ECA have a commonality of interest on the issue.

I think the majority of established big clubs will be happy to pull up the ladder. Chelsea, City, Shaktar etc have virtually no power when pitched against Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Barca, Real, Milan(s), Juve, Bayern etc etc, I think they have seen the emergence of new power clubs and want to stem that along with the majority of fans.

This may be about letting City take a bigger financial penalty rather than exclusion in the first year while they renegotiate contracts, reavaluate amortisation etc and stop making such a big loss on paper.

I think there is a will amongst the big powerful European clubs to stop this 'financial doping'. I think these rules will be implemented.

There is an obvious problem with fining clubs with billionaire owners though!
