But he wasn't looking for people posting it. They sought him out. Telling him to block and ignore is similar to telling someone to buy a pair of ear defenders so they don't have to listen to abuse in the street

Honestly.

It's a criminal offence to make racist abuse online or otherwise.

Collymore was quite reporting that abuse to the police. As far as I know, he's not reporting people for generally being keyboard warriors.

I'm not sure how you can't see that this was the right thing to do.

If you have a thick skin and are happy to ignore any abuse directed at you, then good on you. But that shouldn't mean that everybody should react in the same way.
