    Managerial merry go round

Wigan have given Aston Villa permission to speak to Roberto Martinez about the vacant managerial job at Villa Park.

However, Latics chairman Dave Whelan remains confident the Spaniard will remain at the DW Stadium and is ready to offer Martinez a new contract.

Villa made their approach for Martinez after Rafael Benitez, Steve McClaren and Mark Hughes were all ruled out of the running.

Whelan confirmed Villa had approached him but expects the 37-year-old to stay at Wigan.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "Aston Villa have acted above board and in a totally professional manner.

"They wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday at the time and I granted Villa permission.

"He arrived back yesterday and I presume he has spoken to Villa. I have made it clear to him I will be extending his contract.

"I have never let him down on anything and he has never let me down. I know I can never say never in football, but I would be very surprised if he is Aston Villa's new manager."

Owner Randy Lerner is searching for a new manager after it was revealed last week that Gerard Houllier would not be returning to the club following his health scare.

Villa turned to Martinez in their search for a new manager after Steve McClaren and Rafael Benitez slipped out of the race to replace the Frenchman.

McClaren was due to be interviewed on Thursday by Lerner but sources close to the former England manager claim he has been told he would be "wasting his time" by attending the meeting.

Those same sources indicate the negative reaction of some Villa fans to McClaren's name being linked to the post has been taken into consideration by Lerner.

It has been a frustrating week for Villa after Houllier's reign ended due to concerns over his health.

Hopes of persuading Carlo Ancelotti to become manager were ended when the ex-Chelsea and AC Milan boss announced he was taking a year's sabbatical from the game.

Another potential candidate, Martin Jol, was appointed manager of Fulham on Tuesday, leaving Martinez, Bolton's Owen Coyle, and Mark Hughes - the original bookmakers' favourite after quitting Fulham - as the leading contenders.

Lerner is keen to make an appointment sooner rather than later to allow the new man as much time as possible to assess the strength of the squad ahead of the new campaign.

The claims have neither been confirmed nor denied by Villa, with Lerner understandably keen to make the right appointment to take the club forward.
With it looking like Martinez going to Villa and Hiddink to Chelsea a few managers are going to be without clubs

Off the top of my head
    Ancelotti - Year Off
Rafa - Said he would only manage about 6 clubs in the EPL and Villa would have been the only one without a manager
Hughes - Unless this is a massive front from Villa looks like he has shot himself in the foot, cant see him going to Chelsea to work with Hiddink
Hughton - Talk of him going to Fulham as Jols No 2
Dave Jones - Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at Wigan
Mclaren - Linked with every job but then Chairmen read message boards and decide not to interview him

What a strange thing to say by Whelan.

"I've given Roberto to speak to Villa, but he won't become their manager". WTF?!

I think he's trying to say he won't stand in Martinez' way if he wants to leave (hence allows him to talk to other clubs) but he doesn't believe Martinez wants to leave Wigan.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It seems to me more like a game of musical chairs than a merry-go-round.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Villa have contacted Brum apparently, saying they consider him unemployed and therefore they can speak to him without paying any compensation to Brum. Brum refute this, say they didnt accept his resignation and, as such, would be due £5m if any club employs him.

                  **** - meet fan.

The list of candidates and odds for next Brum boss features Steve McManaman at just 10/1 Same odds as Curbishley and Dave Jones. How bizarre.

Alex McLeish quit Birmingham because he was not consulted properly over transfers and after his chief scout was sacked, according to the League Managers’ Association.

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan said there had been “aggressive and seriously undermining communications” that had made McLeish’s position untenable.

Birmingham acting chairman Peter Pannu has said he will seek compensation if McLeish moves to Aston Villa.

Bevan told Press Association Sport: “Alex decided he had to resign as there had been serious issues for some time between him and the board at Birmingham.

“The LMA recognise it is often very difficult for clubs and chairmen, especially with the financial pressures and 24/7 media coverage. However, it is very disappointing that some clubs don’t follow normal principles of employment law – which can undermine the game, the club and even the community the club is based in.

“Mr Pannu, a senior member of the board, has put into the public domain confidential information contained in Alex’s contract. This is without doubt a breach of confidence.

“It is disappointing that Alex appears to have been criticised for sending his formal resignation letter by e-mail, particularly given that one of the issues Alex resigned over was Mr Pannu’s sacking of Alex’s chief scout, who learned that he was to be dismissed when he was copied in on an e-mail from Mr Pannu to one of the club’s officials.

“There were other issues as well, including not being properly consulted on player transfers, and making a number of aggressive and seriously undermining communications, which ultimately made his position untenable.”
