of course it's no better, morally, but it IS totally different. Reforming from alcoholism is very different to reforming violent bahavior.Originally posted by ChesterDave View PostHe went to prison for drink driving. Its just as bad for me.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years

No, you're right. The press should only comment when it's for the public good.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostWhen did I say or suggest people weren't entitled to opinions?
Argue against the points I make, not the ones you imagine me to based on pigeon-holing my stance!
Just because someone is entitled to an opinion doesn't mean that opinion or the way they express it is right.
All I said was that people harping on about him being scum in the press is not helpful to anyone. Can you honestly say that's actually a good and necessary thing?
The 'good reason for printing something damaging' in this context is because someone is writing about their opinion, which is what the press do all of the time. This 'good reason' stuff is quite a strange concept in a society with a free press, is it not?
The only thing such articles 'don't help' is Barton's attempts to improve his reputation, which is nobody's concern but Barton.Last edited by Kenneth; 20-05-12, 12:31 PM.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years

No, not really. Legally protected entitlement is what you get in a free society, print what pointless trash you like cos you fancy it regardless of what damage it may cause is just absence of ethics.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostNo, you're right. Yet again you're arguing against things I haven't said. I don't have a problem with opinion pieces being written on Barton, I have never said that. I do have a problem with the lazy habit of characterising him as scum to serve up righteous indignation.
You never answered my question in the last post btw.Like blood on iron

As I have said, I don't think good and necessary come in to it. That is, and never has been a moral basis behind public comment. As I also said, they aren't damaging to anything other than his reputation, which I don't think poses public risk etc.
You might be right about there being a habit of dismissing him simply as scum, but I haven't seen such pieces so struggle to comment.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years

So are you saying you never criticise public comment for anything other than factual accuracy and nobody ever should?Originally posted by Kenneth View PostAs I have said, I don't think good and necessary come in to it. No. I'm saying that I haven't seen criticism of Barton that falls into the out of order category. And that commenting on someone with the record of Barton leaves that threshold pretty high. And that I don't see such comment as particularly damaging, as you have suggested it is.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years
