Maybe if he had signed a three year deal or something like that but never a six year deal.

Man U wanted him before he signed his six year deal.

Gentlemans agreement my arse. If he wasnt really happy or was thinking of moving on he would have put a release fee in there.

Everything points to him being very happy till Chelsea wanted him

I'd think it's more CL attraction especially if Spurs are willing to pay him 150k per week if true.

It also may be that Spurs pretty much undervalued him in terms of wages compared to players in the similar position in PL until ManU and Chavs got interested and that also, in addition to CL football, could have caused Modric not to proclaim any loyalty (not that I think that exist for the most part) to Spurs.

Well I seem tor recall reading spurs do have a pretty strict wage structure? although VDV may have changed all that

What are you on about? It's perfectly possible that he was very happy at Spurs and, as a consequence, signed a 6 year deal. Now Chelsea have come in for him and perhaps his head has been turned, with the idea of £160k per week, or whatever they'll pay him.

If he was happy at Spurs, why WOULDNT he sign a 6 year deal?

Not a six year deal on £40k a week. Why would he tie himself down that long time on that "low" wages when Man U was already interested and probably as usually happen already talked to his agent offered him much higher wages?

Yeah but he knew there'd be no CL for Spurs back in late April, didnt he?

Yet his desire to leave only came out when Chelsea bid for him.

Maybe because he was happy FFS? Not rocket surgery.

If a player wants out, they dont sign a new deal, full stop. No player (or certainly no agent, anyway) would be stupid enough to sign a new contract if they want out, on the basis of a "gentleman's agreement" - the agent would, at the very least, get that in writing or as a clause in the contract. Otherwise, they wouldnt sign the deal - unless, of course, the player WAS just very happy to stay.

Probably very safe to say it wasn't 40k a week for 6 years with the Spurs deal anyway.......probably an built-in increase which is fairly common with long term agreements.
Player wants more money, more trophy challenging, 'more' 'perceived' career advancement, and doesn't give two ****s about a legal document he signed.......and is clearly trying to sidestep around the rather thorny issue of getting out of it. Not an altogether uncommon occurrence in this poxy sport.

It's conceivable that he was tapped by Roman (in the similar way like Nando) much earlier and he was hoping once it's made public Levy will let him go without making fuss over it especially if he had the gentleman's agreement as he claims or just simple force his way out if there wasn't any informal agreement.

Why he signed that deal is his problem, suited the club and him equally as it guaranteed that only a huge offer could prize him away
