Fat Sam was hilarious last week. Sky were interviewing him about the fans turning against him despite them still being in the hunt for automatic promotion.

They said they accused him of not playing the 'West Ham way'. When they asked him what that was he said "I have no idea...losing?".

My best mate is a huge west ham fan and hates the way they play. He says its basically 4-5-1 lump the ball to the big man and hope for a goal. If they start a game with a reasonably offensive team they resort back to 4-5-1 hoof ball the minute they get a goal...

I honestly think that is an unfair description. I think his teams have varied in attractiveness (Blackburn and Newcastle were largely **** but Bolton had some periods of decent football) and at least when he first came to the PL were genuinely tactically novel. I think there is an element of fetishising possession in the way people watch football at the minute, which leads to an undervaluing of other features.

It's undeniable that his teams are direct (West Ham won 4-0 or whatever yesterday with ~50% possession against a very poor Barnsley team) but I don't think that necessarily prevents them from being fun to watch.

That said, he seems to think he achievements are unparalleled and is willing to lie to support that view, yet both Moyes and now Pardew have done more in similarly constrained circumstances to him.

In one respect Alladyce is right - if he was foreign the chances are people would responde to him better - we would understand less of what he said and so people would be less sure he's a cunt.
