Uefa Cup - do you care?

Does anyone care about the Uefa Cup these days, other than the teams who are playing in them?

Just looking at TV for tonight, saw there were two matches on and thought ......

"I'll finish off that work for tomorrow"

Watching the Newcastle game, but only (hopefully) for ammo to diss some Geordies with
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
        Mine angry and defrauded young?

Nope, not remotely interested. There was a time when I'd watch ANY game on the telly. Morecambe v Halifax live Conference football? I'd watch it. Not anymore though, and the UEFA Cup for me is probably the single least attractive footballing proposition for me.

So, would you care if Liverpool were playing in it? Go on tell the truth. I think I'd find it difficult.

Of course I would. I've wasted tons of cash going to abysmal (and I mean ABYSMAL) UEFA Cup games over the years. However, that was then...when we didn't make the CL so often (or at all). Now, having won Big Ears again and becoming seasoned regulars in the competition, returning to the UEFA Cup is a horrifying prospect.

But of course I'd watch the games, albeit with a heavy heart and a probable lack of the usual passion.

The competition has gone downhill so much in the 5 years since we won it last - Barca, Rome et al were in it then, remember?

Even the new format is a pisser - if you're a small team and you draw a big gun - e.g. Austria Vienna is in the same group as Ajax - that's still no guarantee that you can earn some cash, because you might not even get to play them at home!!

It does seem awfully convenient for us to say it's gone very much downhill since we won it, but the fact is it's true. As you say Grouch, we beat Roma and Barcelona en route to our win, and beat a much mocked team in the final who'd actually slammed about ten past Inter Milan over two legs in the semis.

The format now is a farce, and only further weakens an already drab competition.

This group format is party to gain more TV revenue and is a poor sister to the Champs league

The only thing left that the UEFA Cup had going for it once the Champions League creamed off so many of the top teams in each country was the old-fashioned, home and away knockout format.

This group stage is so dull - there is nothing riding on these games between largely second-rate teams.
                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
