    COATES RELISHING REDS CHALLENGE

Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates admits he is well outside his comfort zone after moving to England from Uruguay but is confident he has the ability to succeed.

The 20-year-old made his debut ahead of schedule as a substitute in the weekend's 4-0 defeat at Tottenham after injury to Daniel Agger.

Coates is now set for his first start in Wednesday's Carling Cup tie at Brighton less than a month after arriving from Nacional in his homeland for a fee believed to be in the region of £7million.

But the 6ft 6in centre-back, named young player of the tournament in his country's Copa America triumph this summer, is relishing the test of moving to, and playing in, a different country.

"The biggest attraction was the challenge: to come to an unfamiliar place - a huge club - and make a name for myself," he told LFC magazine.

"So far in my career, I have been very lucky; to play for Nacional, to play in the Copa Libertadores, to win the Copa America.

"There has been a lot of success in a short period of time but I have achieved that in a place where I am most comfortable.

"Now, I am here, in a different country, in a different league, with different team-mates.

"The best players are successful wherever they go. I am determined to become an important player here at a historical stage of the club's future."

What was the verdict on his full debut?

I thought he did OK but he will need to work on his distribution. And not as dominant in the air as I though he would be but I am sure that will come.

He did alright, some good moments, couple of wobblers. I think he'll be a beast for us.

Aside from a couple of incidents I thought he was fine, although he wasn't tested very much.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Did alright but he has a long way to go.

Not ready for the physical aspect of PL just yet but he'll be fine.

Needs to play as much as possible and any game he can get side by side Carra would help him immensely.

From what I've seen so far, he almost seems to be shying away from action. He's been slow to react and a bit dodgy when called in to action. Let's hope it's a serious bout of nerves from a young lad and nothing indicative

I think he's been a bit nervy on the ball but am seeing the complete opposite to shy, he loves to get forward and try to win the ball early which is what we need more of, we are always to deep and have been for years.

Do you think so. I did see him try to get forward, it just seemed that he was stranded in the box and well away from the ball. That's only a tv view, hopefully someone at the game will be able to say what his movement was like.

Will he start at the weekend instead of Skrtel?

interesting to see that Carra played the left. a case of Carra being more versatile, or Coates being lined up to play next to Agger?

He's going to need some time to adjust to the English game, it's only natural. Full confidence in him doing just that. Those calling for him to start in the league over Carra right now, are way off.

some shocking attempted "air" passes across the back between last night and spurs game but all in all i liked his performances. take a bit of time given that he doesnt understand his teammates, hasnt played/trained long enough with them and probably lacks fitness/match sharpness. dived in a few times to tackles he wasnt going to get IMO but his eagerness showed in making those tackles in first place. he will be superb for us im sure.
