If we're determined to send him on loan then this would be a great move for him.

Although we'd then need to sign another CB for cover.

Carragher has done well this season but if Agger or Skrtel were to have any amount of time on the sidelines then I'm not sure he'd cope.

I think it's fine to give them the "option" to buy - doesn't mean we have to agree to sell him when the time comes or just make the asking price too much for them to afford & he comes back to us - simple...

That's not really an 'option to buy' though is it (especially from West Broms point of view)? I would assume that any negotiation for such a thing would also be designed to get us a loan fee up front so that even an unsuccessful loan spell for him gets us something. Any way we have nothing other than newspaper speculation to suggest either the loan or any specific clauses are actually being negotiated, do we?

I think he needs experience and a loan would be great for him. Perhaps we can use Wisom as CB cover. Not sure now is a good time to go looking to buy cover.

Neither is West Ham's option for Carroll. An option to buy is exactly that an option. The selling club or the buying club can choose not to exercise that option at the end of the loan...

An option is usually an agreed price that the club who is selling have to accept surely. Otherwise it is nothing at all.

IMO it would be a great move for both parties, from Coates point of view he gets to play regular football and in turn get used to the tempo and pace of the premier league. From our point of our he get to play he gets to play regular football and in turn get used to the tempo and pace of the premier league

If he improves and pushes on, we can bring him back... if he doesn't at least we might break even if we have to sell him. He needs regular football & he could learn a lot from Clarke about the defensive side of things in English football. The option to buy aspect i wouldn't worry about.

I think its only simplified like that on football manager, I remember reading about some deals online about a year ago and they can get really complicated.

But with a loans 'an option to buy' is always there but in most cases it seems first refusal or a prearranged fee is what the media are describing when they say 'option to buy'.

I'll have to try and find out where I read up about that because it's really interesting and a ****ing headache at the same time

                        Seen this on RAWK.

                        Coates, from dream to disappointment

The centre back arrived to England in 2011 as the best defender in the Uruguayan league, but is now paying his dues: he trains, doesn't play, asked Liverpool's authorities to go on a loan and was denied.

How does it feel to train all week and not play?

It's complicated, but every player has to go through this, and you have to train as best as possible so that you don't waste any opportunity given.

Have you talked in the club, with Liverpool's manager?

Yes, yes, in this transfer window there was a possiblity to go out on a loan to some teams, but the club said I couldn't. It also means something, and that is that they still keep me in mind.

Did you insist? Do you want to play, to go out?

I want to play, mostly because of everything that is coming with the national team, where every Uruguayan player wants to be. With that in mind, that's why I want to play, be it on Liverpool or elsewhere.

What do you do during weekends? It must be frustrating to train every day and have free weekends.

I haven't been in many games, but in others I've been on the bench. In any case, I almost always travel with the team and I'm left out on the same day. But you have to be ok, keep a cool head, train well, and wait for the opportunity.

Does this situation piss you off, as Uruguayans say? *

Yes, like anyone would be. It's difficult, but that's why say that one has to handle it he best possible way, so that the manager sees that one is willing to train well and work hard to be there.

                        * [Translator's note: "calentar" (to heat up) is Uruguayan slang for getting angry or pissed off]

Do you find an explanation for this?

No, I don't know. That's something to talk with the manager. All I have to care about is to be fit and and then wait.

How long is your contract with Liverpool?

I'm here until 2016. But we'll see what happens with my future. I have to wait until the transfer window and talk with the club.

Three years is a long time to wait. Have you set yourself a limit for your exit if you are not taking into consideration?

I don't have an exit date, because you have to analyze any incoming offer. Suppose one arrives from a very important club, but I don't have the opportunity that I could get here in Liverpool, so it's better to stay...

Have you talked with your father about leaving Liverpool?

We have, but like I said, it's up to the offers.

Is it the first time that this happens to you?

Since I began in First Division, yes. That's why one takes it differently, because if I was older I might have already gonoe through a situation like this. But this being the first time makes it complicated.

Tabarez (Uruguay's manager) has spoken many times with footballers who couldn't play in their teams. Has he made you any suggestion?

The message is the same for everyone, which is that it is better to be playing. He knows my situation, though. I have the advantage of age because I have plenty of time ahead of me.

At a certain point, there was speculation about interest from Brazil. Would you be seduced by that possiblity, or would you prefer to stay in Europe?

In truth, what matters is not what one would like, but the the sport project presented to you. If the offer seduces me, I have no trouble.

Does that mean that returning to America would not be a step back?

Not at all. I think that Nicolas (Lodeiro) went to play in Brazil, and thanks to that he is in the national team. It's not a step back; so long as one plays it doesn't matter the place.

Still think he is a good prospect and imo he should've played more this year.

With Carra retiring and Skrtel likely being sold not sure that it's smart to get rid of him too and keep only Agger and then look to buy possibly 3 more CBs.

On the other hand, if BR is not going to give him a proper chance and doesn't see him as a viable option why keep him around as it is not in his and our best interest..

I'd give him some games in the remainder of the season to assess him properly, we've nothing to lose - lets face it this season is a write off.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

We are fighting for a place in EL and I cannot see BR taking chances by giving Coates any playing time between now and end of the season bar some unexpected injuries.
