Not sure we know precisely what he's getting, this source claims £50k p/w.

There's enough anecdotal evidence IMO that during Comolli's tenure we offered some pretty hefty contracts - just look at Flanagan's , Jose Enrique's , Doni's, Downing's and Adam's. We were operating under a different system back then - obviously we've subsequently started to move towards more performance related contracts (or trying to) but it wouldn't surprise me to see Coates on a big contract.

        Don't get me wrong I wouldn't turn down £50k a week .

I think I'd rather earn £35k a week and play every week than earn £50k a week and waste my short career playing the odd reserve team game.

There's too many players these days though that seem to disagree.

He says he wants to stay in England I don't see any reason for assuming that means he wants that to be at Liverpool.

that £15k a week extra equates to about 780k a year. Over, say 4 years, its over £3m you'd be walking away from....

Look at Coates - he got his loan to sunderland who probably paid half of his wages - but LFC would have had the other half covered then. So he gets his 50k per week and gets football (well that was the plan when he moved there anyway)

Looking at the player, I would keep him as 4th choice next season and let Toure leave. To subsidise his wages at another club would be crazy and without CL football next year anyway, we shouldnt need our 4th choice defender that much.

It is, but that's a short term view. At the end of his current deal no one else is going to pay him anywhere near that.

If he left now and took £35k, played every week, rebuilt his reputation, then he could easily move again for £50k+.

Footballers are of course too thick and greedy to think this way, but still.

Lol, that link can't even spell Brendan right. It was passed around the internet as a "leak" which has proven to be bull**** since and indeed the authors of that say themselves the numbers not 100% accurate, I'd say 10% accurate would be pushing it. Indeed I think they were probably taken from Fifa if they aren't completely made up. Interesting we only apparently pay people in multiples of £5k.

Some of those salaries are most definitely wrong too from what we know, Sturridge. Johnson & Gerrard for starters, and Assaidi was most certainly not on £50k, signing reports had him on £20k and this random link had him on much less than that even. £50k would have been ridiculous, he was on £7k in Holland. Even in the bizarro world of Commoli we weren't signing 20yr old defenders from Uruguay on £50k/week, if you look back at reports from his signing everywhere has it at around half that and he certainly won't have had it doubled since.

                So basically I call shenanigans
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                Mine angry and defrauded young?

Would we have been betterr off keeping Coates and selling Lovren?

No, Coates is worth more £.

Coates was too slow for a top level centre back in the modern game. Exactly like Lovren tbh who for some reason I thought was faster than he is.

Probably because he is always sprinting back to try and make a last ditch tackle to recover from the mistake he has just made.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It was probably because he looked less isolated with two DM's in Morgan & Wanyama. They also seemed more organised at the Saints.
