Paddy Power's whole marketing strategy is based running ads that risk getting banned. It's quite an achievement to reach a new low in marketing but they've managed it consistently. Revolting.

Are they really so sinister? I've always assumed they were cheeky or testy, but I've never thought of them as actually malicious before.

It's difficult to manage. I agree with you that clearly we don't want players running round with sponsors messages, but this wasn't that bad and right now its an isolated incident. UEFA made themselves look like idiots though with the size of the fine. A couple of games ban would stop this I think.

nah you've got to fine them enough that a company who want to use this advertising technique will feel it if they agree to underwrite the fine.

also, do you not think the punishment meted out will determine whether or not this is an isolated incident in the future? i for one hope to not live in a world that's just one big advert someday.

Problem is the bigger the fine the more publicity the thing will get.

Players would surely not agree to wearing the sponsors clothing like this if they were going to be banned for multiple games though?

The trannies ad was pretty nasty, as was the stereotyping in the ad about the bloke who bet against his team.

Really, it's their entire strategy. And all to encourage people to gamble.

Advertising is bad enough as it is, without disappearing down into the sewers.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

                    Sure.

So there's a deterrent for the player (you'll be banned) and a deterrent for the advertiser (the only way a player would do it is if you pay the fine and that is likely to use up enough of your marketing budget t make you think about spending it some other way).

I hope this counting down malarky does not become commonplace

Wow. Those have passed me by. Sounds pretty 'edgy' (urgh how I hate the way that word is used) at best.

England versus Portugal - what a terrible final that would be.
