The way I see it is....he didn't get the pay rise thing, then Kenny made it clear he wasn't an automatic pick, in fact he'd be on the bench more often than not, Meireles didn't like it, felt unwanted, Chelsea bid and understandably he wanted to go. I reckon the club told Dalglish the money would be useful and/or it's not club policy to give big pay rises (I think Meireles is telling the truth about that) to less than vital players who are his age.
The other possibility is Dalglish was influenced by LDP's 'pussy' jibe..

I'm still puzzled as to why Chelsea actually wanted him. It smacked of a desperation attempt to find someone to play with Torres, and then they changed their minds when they realised he wasn't the man and started playing him at defensive midfield, before realising he couldn't do that either.
