Couple months back

He's like Robbo in the 80's.
He plays, we win.
He doesn't play, we don't win.
Nani is a special player too, but Rooney is the talisman now.

Now

He was abysmal. He wasted a brilliant chance in the first half. He wasted numerous chances in the second. Then he goes and gives the ball away leading to Basel's second goal when he should easily have handled it. He did little more than give the ball away and waste chances.

Oh, and he's making £200k+ a week. Not remotely worth it when he's pissy over England. Playing for England does nothing but harm his club performances. It's a pain in the ass to have to deal with every time he does something stupid that he takes ages to sort out. It can be all for the love of England or some other bull****, but I really don't give a damn about that. It's never done anything good for him or for United.
