The wantaway striker was ordered to train away from the United first-team on Thursday as he attempts to force through a summer transfer to Chelsea

          EXCLUSIVE
          By Greg Stobart

Wayne Rooney has taken a significant step towards the Manchester United exit door after he was ordered to train with reserves by David Moyes on Thursday following a meeting between club officials and his agent Paul Stretford, Goal can reveal.

Stretford attended arrived at Carrington early on Thursday and when Rooney turned up for training, he was told that he would be working with the reserve players.

United Sources have told Goal that the wantaway striker appeared furious, grunting expletives and threatening to 'punch Moyes in his bug eyed face' although he completed the full training session, which started at 10am, he is now considering handing in a formal transfer request.

Rooney is recovering from a shoulder problem that ruled him out of Tuesday’s friendly against AIK in Stockholm, but was given no indication that he would be exiled from the first-team squad.

Moyes’ decision to keep Rooney away from the first-team represents a change in United’s stance towards the striker. The United boss has publicly insisted Rooney is not for sale but, privately, has been angered by the 27-year-old’s attempts to engineer a summer transfer to Chelsea.

Rooney is desperate to push through a move to the Blues, who have had two bid rejected for the 27-year-old, the latest worth nearly £30 million including add-ons.

He believes there is no way back for him at the club and is highly unlikely to play in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Sevilla on Friday or the Community Shield clash against Wigan on Sunday.

And after Moyes banished him from the first-team on Thursday, it appears increasingly likely that United will look to cash in on the England international this summer.

Goal first revealed in May that Rooney was ‘hell bent’ on leaving United while he is understood to fear a backlash from the fans if the club force him to stay at Old Trafford.

Rooney remains Chelsea’s number-one target as Jose Mourinho looks for a top class forward, with sources suggesting that the saga surrounding the England star’s future is likely to continue until the final week of the window.

Rooney made it known that he was “angry and confused” after quotes from Moyes emerged suggesting he would be kept at Old Trafford simply as back-up to Robin van Persie.

Moyes subsequently clarified his comments to Rooney in telephone conversations, but the former Everton man is determined to leave this summer, having been further angered by comments from Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, suggesting that the club would not open talks to extend Rooney’s £250,000-a-week contract, which expires in 2015.

Blow for United as Fabregas finally rules out move

Cesc Fabregas has moved to end speculation about a possible move to Manchester United by insisting he is "very happy" at Barcelona.

David Moyes' side had two bids for the former Arsenal man rejected by Barcelona earlier this summer, while Barca's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta declared at the start of the week that United had given up on trying to sign the Spain international.

Fabregas ruled out a move away from the Nou Camp while at the Confederations Cup in June but kept silent after United made their interest in him official, prompting speculation that he was in favour of a transfer.
But speaking in a press conference today, the midfielder said: "Triumphing in Barcelona is what I have been hoping for all my life, it's been my dream since I was a child.

"I am very happy at Barcelona and I haven't spoken to any other club in the last two years."
Fabregas also defended not making a statement on his future in the midst of speculation about United's interest.

"I've been relaxed about it the whole time, I didn't have to clarify anything because the only thing I was thinking about was staying at Barca," he said.
"As I haven't deceived anyone or hidden anything, I told the club's press department that I would speak when it was my turn to speak to the press."
And he insisted there was never any truth in the speculation about him wanting a return to the Premier League.

"Stories have been invented," he said. "I don't know why speculation grew even after Tito (Vilanova, former Barca coach), Zubizarreta, Tata (Gerardo Martino, new Barca coach) and (Barca vice-president Josep) Bartomeu all said they wanted me to stay.

"I was never given any sign from the club to make me think they didn't want me, I have always felt wanted here. I spoke to Bartomeu, the president (Sandro Rosell) in person and Tata also told me he wanted me to stay and there's been no problem."

Fabregas also denied that he had requested a new contract from the Catalan club and promised to try and improve his performances for Barca next season.

"What I have to do is do everything better because I'm at the biggest and most demanding club in the world," he said.

That rug really tied the room together.

funny but also quite good for us - if united, champions of england and apparently a 'rich' club can't get their targets then we shouldn't get too down

It is laughable isn't it. FFS what will it take to get the message through to their dense numbskulls?

I just heard some waffly press release about how united have accepted he won't be joining them and respect the fact he has a contract with another club. It didn't appear to mention that Fabregas doesn't actually want to go to OT.

Chelsea prepare to make third bid for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney
                                • José Mourinho refuses to give up his pursuit of striker
                                • Rooney understood to be angry with David Moyes

José Mourinho is refusing to relent in his pursuit of Wayne Rooney. The Chelsea manager has already had two bids – the latest believed to be in the region of £25m – rejected by Manchester United for the unsettled forward, with David Moyes stressing the 27-year-old will not be sold.

But, with Rooney understood to be angry with Moyes's stance and ready to leave the Premier League champions, Mourinho knows there is enough discontent to keep alive his hope of bringing the England forward to Stamford Bridge.

Rooney's advisers are fully aware of the Portuguese's intentions and if, as expected, the striker hands in a transfer request within the next week, that will encourage a third Chelsea bid to test United's resolve further.

Mourinho, who suffered his first pre-season defeat on Wednesday when Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Real Madrid to win the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup, will not give up without a fight.

Images of Rooney training with United's reserves on Thursday would have been duly noted at Chelsea's Washington DC base.

"We are far away so we are not in England to know every detail but we are doing things in the correct way," Mourinho said after the Real match. "We made the bid and Manchester United have reacted. Let's see what happens. But we can't do more than we are doing now.

"We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the player, no contact, absolutely nothing. We are doing everything in an ethical way, so let's see if things change.

"There is no time limit. We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would like to have with us. We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day. And we will see how it comes."

While Chelsea have fared well in the US with a number of promising youngsters such as Kevin De Bruyne, the Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel and André Schürrle all impressing, the need for a stellar striker remains Mourinho's number-one priority.

Asked if he would be happy to begin the season without Rooney on board, Mourinho said: "What we have is what we have. We have very good young players, they don't need us to buy players to replace them. What they need is our trust and work and our support."

One player who will not be leaving is the Brazilian defender David Luiz. Chelsea instantly rejected Barcelona's £35m bid on Tuesday, with Mourinho leaving the La Liga champions in no doubt about what would happen if they try again.

"It's lost time for them. My advice to them is to go to the second player on their list because they are wasting their time," he said. "We don't want to lose our best players. No chance."

Taking on his former club less than three moths after their acrimonious parting of the ways was always going to be difficult for Mourinho, who was roundly booed and shrieked at by the predominantly Real Madrid supporting crowd at the Sun Life Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.

Madrid certainly deserved their victory with a performance which suggested Carlo Ancelotti is already beginning to mould a side which will challenge Barcelona in the forthcoming La Liga season.

Mourinho, though, in typical fashion, was quick to point out the reasons why Madrid were quicker to the ball and more dominant overall. Ancelotti's players have been based here for three days while Chelsea have flown in and out of the Washington DC base on match days.

"This was a friendly, so there was no celebrations when we won friendlies and no dramas because we lost," he added. "We could see the difference in approach from both teams. They have been here for three days. They are preparing for this match.

"I know they have trained once a day and I know one of those days was a recovery session. They play with the best team for the first minute and they made their first change when it was 3-1. We had a completely different approach. I need to see my players. I need to make conclusions."
