Wayne Rooney gave his own sign of defiance during England training today.

Manchester United striker Rooney was the first outfield player out onto the pitch at England's training HQ at St George's Park, Burton, this morning.

Rooney then proceeded to smash balls into the empty net and when training started there was no holding back as he sprinted enthusiastically in warm-up drills and flew into tackles as England did pass and move drills.

It was clear that Rooney seemed determined to send out his own message after Manchester United boss David Moyes claimed he could report up for England but was still not fully fit which is why he missed the Community Shield.

But anyone watching Rooney train for the Teenage Cancer Trust international against Scotland on Wednesday night would never have believed that.

Rooney's transfer saga continues to hang over Old Trafford but the England striker did not appear to have a care in the world.

But England boss Roy Hodgson does appear to have a few concerns. With the Manchester United players involved in the Community Shield and Chelsea only having just returned from their US tour, the cupboard looks very bare.

Steven Gerrard, Rickie Lambert, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Jermain Defoe, Kyle Walker, James Milner and Glen Johnson were the only other seniors to train this morning.

It meant Hodgson had to call up Luke Garbutt, Eric Dier, Tom Thorpe, Jesse Lingaard, Tom Carroll, Michael Keane and Todd Kane from the under-21s to make up the numbers for the seniors in training.

Rooney seems to be finding comfort in the company of Stevie and Glen Johnson.

Moyes does a lot of work on team shape and playing in zones. His coaching stuff is all at full match pace, 9v11, 10v11, 11v11. There are some articles on his fitness regimes, and it seems he works a lot on power and stamina, and weights. I know that some fitness coaches frown on that, and they might be right, but if you look at Everton's injury record, they may have a point. There is no need to run players into the ground, and I think that's what Moyes does. A lot of physical work, followed by team-shape. Exactly like Hodgson used to do. And to be honest, so does Steve Clarke. It works great for some teams with lesser resources (Pulis is the same type of coach), but it has it's limits. Rafa was able to tread the fine line, but he was also a fitness professional. Moyes isn't, so he doesn't have the scientific thinking to know when to ease off, by the looks of things. Rodgers, on the other hand, like Mourinho who mentored him, and like the Dutch almost always have done, and the Spanish in the last 20 years, know that you can get the same fitness adaptations from playing the game, and by changing the size of the game and the numbers involved to get different effects. I think Moyes is a straight "fitness separate from tactical training" coach, which is where the "dinosaur" comparisons come from.

                    Ahhh ok.

I do for the first time genuinely think the Mancs might well struggle, they've got a horrible opening sequence of games and if they don't pick up much for them the confidence will certainly take a hit.

Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari talking to BBC World News about Wayne Rooney:

"How can you be unhappy as a professional footballer in the Premier League these days? You are getting well looked after and well paid, life's wonderful. When I saw the headlines that he was frustrated and unhappy, that didn't go down (well) with me, not at all.

"It's Wayne's camp that have made all the moves and Manchester United can afford to sit back and get the player ready for the start of the season."
