Difference was that the managers in those cases wanted to keep them. It is part of Mourinho's power play at Chelsea. He needs to be seen as more important than any player.

Perhaps Chelsea would rather sell to a team who are neither a big threat in Europe or domestically this season than to a genuine CL rival?

Juan Mata is a player every team needs. He instantly makes you better. The only reason he is out of Chelsea is because Mourinho likes to pick on the biggest bloke and try to stamp his authority.

Him, RVP, Rooney, Vidic and Januzaj are 5 very good players. Thats the core of a brilliant team. I just hope like others he doesnt know what to do with him.

The agreement in place for UTD to secure Mata is that Utd will not bid for Barkley in the summer.

Wouldn't make any difference if they did, apart from drive the price up- he'd never go there now, Everton are actually a better team, with a better manager and are higher in the league. Also more chance of being in the Europe next season.

I think it's all to do with Rooney

I think its just more likely that they are offering what Chelsea want and no-one else is willing to.

Manure have spent nearly 1/3rd of a predicted 'warchest' on a position that didn't need strengthening. In the meantime, quietly in the background, Michael Carrick picked up an injury. Wonder if Rooney/Mata/Januzaj can cover there?

                          The Guardian - ‎23‎ ‎January‎ ‎2014

Following Manchester United's Capital One Cup defeat to Sunderland, Greater Manchester police say they received a bizarre call from a supporter who dialled 999 and demanded to speak to the former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Greater Manchester police issued a statement on their Facebook page reminding football supporters that, though defeat could be "depressing" that the 999 number is to be used for emergencies only.

The police force said: "Last night, at approximately 10.30pm a man from the Crumpsall area of north Manchester rang 999 in a drunken state demanding to speak to Sir Alex Ferguson about last night's result.

"Obviously, it can be a sad and depressing moment when you're [sic] football team loses a game, however can we all please remember that 999 is to be used for emergencies only. For any other police related enquiries that are not an emergency, you can ring 101.

"If you would like to speak to Sir Alex about recent football results we here at GMP Manchester North can only suggest you try ringing Manchester United FC directly as you will probably (not definitely) have a much better chance of getting through to him there rather than ringing the police."

Manchester United were beaten in a penalty shootout by Sunderland and knocked out of the Capital One Cup as a result. They currently lie seventh in the Premier League table after David Moyes succeeded Ferguson as the club's manager.

I don't see why people are so blase about this. Mata's a very decent player, and with RVP and Rooney to come back I can see them moving upwards. £37m just goes to show that there really is money to spend there, and this could just be the start of an expensive rebuild.

Even without RVP and Rooney for so long and their worst run for decades, they're just 6 points off us, add to that a fresh Mata and things are going to be tight for 4th. With Spurs on the up I just don't see us grabbing that spot.

you don't think with 17 games left, its possible to catch up 6 or 7 points? We struggled badly at home to a crap villa side. Considering we have Utd away, Arsenal, City, Chelsea & Spurs at home which we might not win any of, I'd think a 10 point gap isn't a gimme. They are 6 points behind with Rooney, Van Persie & Mata to come in. Everton & Spurs aren't overly consistent either. I think they will get 4th.
