I think they thought that the media **** was going to be too much. My guess is before the leak they planned to keep him until the end of the season. Maybe someone deliberately tipped their hand. The other option is that certainty now might make it easier to negotiate for managers and even players they want to recruit.

You may be right but I would think you need to start contacts with agents ahead of time for both. Look at what happened last season for United when they had no firm plan.

I certainly think there are several managers who are maneuvering for jobs for next season (van Gaal being the obvious one) and several managers will be without a job post world cup. I would think you would want any manager to be making plans for next season as soon as possible. Especially with the United squad clearly needed a serious revamp.
