Manchester United have reportedly held talks with former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho about a shock move to Old Trafford.

Carvalho, now 36, is currently playing for French club Monaco but his agent has been exploring the possibility of a move away before the transfer deadline.

And now reports in Italy say United have held initial talks with the Portuguese centre back over a dramatic return to English football.

It’s claimed that Carvalho is keen on the idea and the move would allow him to provide cover for Louis van Gaal’s first choice defenders whilst he earns his coaching badges.

Carvalho turned down the opportunity to become assistant manager at Chelsea in the summer but he is thought to be now focused on a career in coaching.

United are still looking to add to their defensive options but are not searching for a first-choice centre back, just a reliable option as back-up.
