As Man Utd fans call into work sick this morning, still too devastated at the news that Sir Alex has ended his 27 year reign to drag themselves out of bed, they should consider the words of a great doctor:

This day was always coming, but the swiftness and finality of yesterday’s announcement has left not only sadness, but a realisation that it is impossible to replace the greatest manager the game has seen, and following his departure Man Utd will never be the same again.

David Moyes looks certain to step into Ferguson’s shoes; with a meagre record of 13 league titles, 2 Champions League crowns, 5 FA Cups and 4 League Cups to follow on from. And while Moyes may be un-backable now at current odds of 1/40, that wasn’t always the case.

Before the 2001–02 season, Ferguson was set to trade in his day job at Old Trafford for a life stocking his wine cellar and visiting his horse stables. Before he reversed his decision, the Next Man Utd Manger market was in full swing – with David Moyes priced at 66/1, before some shrewd money on the Scot saw him move into 40/1.

Favourite for the job was David O’Leary at 2/1. O’Leary is currently picking up a suitcase of money in Dubai, having done such a bad job of managing Al Ahli that they have been forced to pay him £3.3million compensation for booting him out of the country.

George Burley was another front runner for the job at 8/1. Think of the heights Man Utd could have scaled had Burley, last seen getting sacked by Cypriot side Apollon Limassol after only two games in 2012, taken up reigns at the Theatre of Dreams.
