The captain clause is also just as abhorrent. Probably plays into why Vidic is leaving as well.

He reached his peak 5 or 6 years ago, massively overrated. That said, if he moved to Chelsea or City I think we'd possibly see a new Rooney, he's too safe where he is and really doesn't seem to bothered about anything. A new environment would do him the world of good.

If that's the case, surely Phil Jones deserves half a million a week.

A report today suggested the England international had signed a highly-lucrative record-breaking four-and-a-half-year deal worth in the region of £70 million to the player. The contract would see the England striker earn £300,000 a week to stay at Old Trafford until 2018.

It's ****ing madness when you realise how much he might be paid over the length of the contract.

I can't believe any other club in the world would pay him that much
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

                Apparently it's a 5.5 year deal, meaning that he'll be making £300k until he's 34.

That's insane. Would have let him go.

Its also means theyll pay 80m over the contract length.

I guess they also have to give the impression that they can keep and attract the best players for their fans, other players and most importantly the sponsors who if they see the best players leaving might think twice before signing up to sponsorship deals.

All reports I've seen confirmed 4.5.

I hope all these big contracts come back to haunt them, if they dont make the CL for a few years.

Ideally they would do a 'Leeds'

£300k p/w is obscene on every level.

                            I have no words.

I suppose the taxman will be happy with almost half of it, I wonder how young Wayne will manage on a mere £160k p/w net.

                            Haha - his n.i. £2.1m per year...

                              crazy

                              this could really hurt united

£300k a week - i actually *whispers* think rooney is quality player *whispers* but £300k no ****ing way

i could understand that much if say - lionel messi's contract ended and he said right, i'm a free agent....make me your offers, and there was a biddign way by every club in the world trying to sign him

but other than a bit of muted interest from chelsea it's not like they have to offer him that much to stay

plus he's 28 - he's not going to get any better

and despite i think he's a good player, it's not like he dominates every week against every team

i hope it's true and i hope he signs it....

it will mean united are no better off on the pitch, but they will be worse off it as they won't be able to afford to offer potential new stars big wages.

plus it will prob upset the dressing room and if they don't make champions league it could be a disaster
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

I think Rooney is a quality player too and there was a time I'd have loved to have him here - but there's no way he has developed into the player he should have. He's more unfulfilled potential than actual brilliance at this stage. Weight and mental issues have stunted his development.
