MANCHESTER United face a backlash from season-ticket holders, who have learnt that they will be charged Champions League prices for Europa League seats next season, in the event of the club slipping into the competition.

Fans had hoped that Europa League games would be excluded from season-ticket prices for 2014-15, as they were when the club were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage two years ago.

However, tickets for the lesser European competition will be included in the controversial "automatic cup scheme", which also forces season-ticket holders to buy a seat for FA Cup matches and is one of the most resented features of the commercial regime under the ownership of the Glazer family.

The decision to charge fans up to £50 for the dubious privilege of watching United play the lesser lights of European football next autumn has the potential to persuade many supporters not to renew their season tickets.

At a fans' forum last week, the club did not provide a direct answer to the question of whether season-ticket holders would be exempt from paying for Europa League tickets and whether the pricing regime would change. But it is understood that there are no plans to reduce the sums fans will be charged for group stage European nights, as United also did for the games against Ajax and Bilbao, who eliminated them from the 2011-12 Europa League.

Season-ticket holders would be likely to buy Europa League tickets even if they were excluded from the automatic cup scheme, because not doing so would mean they receive a lower priority in a ballot for away matches, semi-finals or finals.

With the Europa League United's likely destination next season, the decision to retain the same ticketing regime brings a risk, at a time when supporters are starting to lose patience during this difficult first season of the David Moyes era.

Moyes has lost a significant amount of support, to judge by the latest survey of a sample panel of 300 United fans questioned by the 'Red Issue' fanzine. The percentage of fans believing he should be removed now has risen from 7pc to 17pc. (© Independent News Service)

It's unbelievable that we're in the title race at the same time as Man Utd are imploding.

As soon as Spurs lose a few matches (assuming we keep winning), I'll be breaking my wrists Arsenal 5-1 style!

CRYSTAL Palace fans have reacted with fury at the suggestion away supporters will wear Eric Cantona masks during Saturday's clash with Manchester United.

Selhurst Park was the setting for one of the most controversial moments of the Frenchman's career, and Eagles fans have never forgotten it.

In January 1995, while leaving the pitch after being red-carded, Cantona lashed out at Palace fan Matthew Simmons.

That kung fu kick has become one of the most iconic images in recent football history.

But now a war of words between Palace and United fans has been sparked after a tweet from Man U fan group, Stretford End Flags, which read: "Lots of Cantona masks and flags will be taken to Palace on Saturday by #mufc fans. Worryingly, some masks look nothing like Eric!".

Within seconds Palace fans were venting their outrage.

@ConnorHarbs3 said: "For united fans to take Cantona masks to Selhurst on Saturday would be an utter disgrace and a let down to both clubs."

‏@TheEaglesBeak said: "So #MUFC fans to celebrate Cantona at Selhurst this weekend. Bad taste. These are fans that complain about chants against them."

@jopose76 said: "To celebrate Eric Cantona at Selhurst is deplorable... Do it at your own ground."

@GilesyL14 said: "Any idiot who tries to wear a Cantona mask to Selhurst on Saturday, should be refused entry. As simple as that."
