A signed mural of David Moyes was severely damaged in an arson attack at a Liverpool pub.

Four masked men entered Taff’s Tavern in Derby Lane, Old Swan shortly before 10.30pm on Friday, while staff were still serving customers.

One of the gang poured flammable liquid on the floor of the bar area before setting it alight and they fled the scene.

None of the staff, customers or residents living in the flats above the pub were injured in the fire.

But the tavern's owner Taff Hughes was today counting the cost of the damage, with furniture and stock destroyed and much of the building covered in black soot.

This includes the picture of the former Everton manager, which Moyes signed before leaving Goodison Park for his short-lived spell at Manchester United.

The mural, which proclaimed the Scot 'manager of the decade', was well known among football fans and became an internet meme with its slogan "10 years at Everton for boss who proves you don't need trophies to be a winner but he is a winner'.

Mr Hughes, 79, who has run the pub for nearly 25 years, said: "David Moyes hasn't survived, I'm afraid he's down but somebody said they could restore him. I might get another one done.
It's an evil act for someone to commit, but at least there is some silver lining. Although I did like the desperation in the "but he is a winner" (honestly, he really is).

Dirk Kuyt to Manchester United? Louis van Gaal linked with move for former Liverpool player

Manchester United have been linked with a shock move for former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt.

Incoming manager Louis van Gaal is clearly a fan of the 33-year-old having selected him for the Netherland's World Cup squad and played him from the start in the 2-0 win over Chile in the group stage.

Reports now suggest Van Gaal may seek to continue working with Kuyt beyond this summer by bringing him to Old Trafford.

Since leaving Liverpool in 2012 the Dutchman has scored 18 goals in 63 league appearances for Turkish side Fenerbahce.

During his time at Liverpool he scored 51 goals in 208 league appearances over a six-year period. However it was Kuyt's work ethic rather than his goal return that caught the eye during his time at Anfield.

Any move to bring Kuyt to Manchester United could be met with some resistance from fans. Few players have ever represented both English football's two most successful sides and Kuyt's hat-trick against United in 2011 will not have been forgotten at Old Trafford.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

If they're in for the likes of Dirk, I think they'll do well to finish as high as seventh next year.

Over the hill, overpaid and over there. Happy with that.

Love this. Look at what they've given him to hold in trophy winning fashion.. WTF is it anyway! ? the top bit of a trophy he's yet to win ?

If he'd stayed with Everton and gone another 10 years he'd have got the middle bit, then another ten a handle, 50 years he'll have full blown trophy!
